We have been awarded the Royal Geographic Society's Cherry Kearton Award for our multi-decadal practice at the boundary between sculpture, photography and other image making, and environmental knowledge production.

Professor Joe Smith, Director of the Royal Geographical Society, said:

“It is our great privilege to recognise such an outstanding group of scholars, researchers, explorers and conservationists for our 2026 medals and awards.

“This year’s recipients are recognised for deepening our understanding of our world, its people, and the processes that shape it. We celebrate their contribution to geographical science and we know that such recognition inspires further achievement and sparks curiosity”.

Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey, joint recipients of the 2026 Cherry Kearton Award, said:

"What a wonderful and unexpected surprise to be awarded this medal - we feel very honored to be in such distinguished company."

Wishing Sir David Attenborough a wonderful 100 Birthday today!! Here he was 10 years ago 'over writing' the 'Attenborough Pitcher Plant' on our 'Seeing Red.. Overdrawn' art work at the David Attenborough Building in Cambridge

Ackroyd & Harvey
Seeing Red…Overdrawn, 2016

Seeing Red…Overdrawn depicts thousands of species considered to be facing an extremely high risk of extinction. It takes inspiration from the Red List of Threatened Species, which is compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and widely recognized as the most comprehensive approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species. On 22 October 2015, 4,734 species were listed on the IUCN Red List as being Critically Endangered. The data was extracted and each species name printed on a 7m wide canvas.

In one sense the writing is on the wall. Yet the text is printed very faintly. One member of the public at a time is invited to make their mark by over-writing with indelible pen the name of one of the species, drawing attention to it, and bringing it to visibility.
Daily “over-writing” sessions: 12 – 1 pm.

Seeing Red..Overdrawn was first commissioned for the opening of the David Attenborough Building in Cambridge, 2016 as part of the Conflicted Seeds + Spirit exhibition.
