Thank you Doncaster School for Deaf Children for joining us at ArtBomb last week to visit Matthew Humphrey's exhibition, In Translation.

Earlier this year, Matthew visited the school - where his mum once studied - to create collaborate artworks with the pupils.

KS3 pupils built their own bird boxes in their Design & Technology lesson, and KS1 to KS4 came together to create a bespoke wallpaper inspired by Matthew's father's portfolio of bird drawings.

This collaborative project allowed Matthew to retrace his mother's footsteps, and gave pupils the opportunity to see their own artwork exhibited in a gallery space.

Beyond the Scroll: Rethinking Socially Engaged Practice (One-Day Symposium, Workshops & Evening Social)

ArtBomb invites artists, activists and the curious public to a free day of talks, workshops and live interventions exploring how socially engaged practice can reclaim focus and meaning in an age of distraction.

Taking place in ArtBomb’s high street shop — hosted in partnership with the Unitarian Church — Beyond the Scroll examines the double meaning of the “scroll”: sacred script and endless digital feed.

Against a backdrop of algorithmic attention, anxiety and cultural noise, this one-day symposium asks how artists can interrupt habitual ways of seeing and speaking, and how creative practice can be genuinely of service.

Join us. Let’s go beyond the scroll.

Degree Show: The Complexities of the Broken Mind and the Broken Vases

Join Doncaster-born artist Matt Redfern for his first solo exhibition this Easter weekend!

Matt’s practice has developed through a combination of a part-time degree in painting and professional experience supporting individuals through challenging moments.

Working primarily in oil and acrylic, his figurative practice explores male mental health through intense, narrative-driven imagery, balanced by colourful and visually engaging compositions.

Presented amongst the seats of Doncaster Unitarian’s historic balcony, Matt leverages this elevated architectural space to close the comfortable distance between staged space and audience, between artwork and viewer, fostering an intense intimacy with his work and its exploration of male mental health.

Matthew Humphreys is a UK-based artist working with moving image, photography and installation. Exhibited internationally, his work explores memory, perception and the body, often drawing on personal archives and intimate encounters. As the child of deaf adults, his practice is shaped by ideas of translation, attention and visual communication.

Humphreys was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries and won the Best Project prize at Celeste Visible White. His work has also been recognised through the Celeste Prize (Finalist 2015, 2017), the Aesthetica Art Prize (Longlisted 2016), and FLUX: Artist Moving Image Festival at MK Gallery, where he won the festival prize in 2013. He has received several grants from Arts Council England, including a Project Grant in 2024, as well as support through Grants for the Arts and the Artists’ International Development Fund with the British Council.
