Putting the Hours in: 1/15s on the Barton Grass ⏳🚁

Before heading to the valleys or airshows, it’s all about the training ground.

Gyrocopters like this Cavalon/Calidus (G-YROU) at Barton Aerodrome are deceptive. Because they move across the frame relatively slowly compared to fast jets, panning at 1/15 second demands unreal torso control and follow-through to avoid camera shake, all while waiting for the rotor disc and pusher prop to blur into full motion.

Spend enough hours tracking slow rotors on the grass, and tracking fast metal through a turn feels like muscle memory.

"Commit to the blur."

High shutter speeds freeze the action, but slow shutters capture the violence and speed of a low-level pass.

At 1/60s, keeping the canopy and cockpit frame locked in critical focus across the frame takes complete commitment through the follow-through. A fraction too fast or slow on the rotation and the entire frame turns to mush.

When it connects, though? Worth every missed frame.

Texan Alert!

Knife-edge at 1/30s.

Pulling a 560mm lens down to 1/30 of a second on a high-speed, 90-degree bank through the valley leaves zero room for error. Every millimetre of the pan has to match the aircraft’s exact rotation and descent.

Complete 360° prop blur, crisp wing-glints, and the background dragged into pure linear motion.

Unbelievable Milestone Alert!

We've surpassed 1.8k members! I'm so proud of our community right now.

When I decided to create a niche group/page dedicated to only really slow-shutter photography, something I'm super addicted to because of inspirational photographers like David Lister photography (credit where credit is due - if you don't already, you should follow), and there not being any other page/group I could find, I honestly didn't think it would garner much interest, as there's just so much other stuff out there getting attention.

P47 Thunderbolt Incoming at 840mm - Shot at 1/60.

I sometimes switch to DX mode at 840mm giving 1260mm equivalent. Especially as displays in the UK seem to be getting further and further away.

Staring down twin Pratt & Whitney Double Wasps at 840mm.

Tracking the polished nose of the A-26C Invader rolling straight down the centerline. Dragging the shutter to 1/30s spins wide, ghostly prop discs while every rivet, canopy frame, and split-painted cowl locks in dead sharp.

Hurricane Alert!

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I "P3717"

Layering the flight line at 840mm and 1/20s.

Tracking Hurricane P3717 as she floats over the grass on final approach, panning right through foreground action. The 1/20s exposure spins a full prop disc and blurs the surroundings into pure motion, while keeping every cockpit strut and panel seam sharp.
