Watching a landscape gradually take shape…

I thought I’d share a little behind-the-scenes look at the painting we’re currently working on during my August Landscape Painting Course.

These three images show how the painting has developed so far — from the first loose layers and basic structure, through to gradually building the woodland, introducing more light and atmosphere, and beginning to develop the reflections in the water.

There’s still more work to do, but I always enjoy seeing how much a painting changes as each new layer is added.

On my Landscape Painting Courses we work on one painting over four weekly sessions, which gives us time to build the composition gradually and explore different techniques along the way.

I’ll share the finished painting once we’ve completed it!

🎨 My Landscape Painting Courses are held in small groups at my studio in Ditchling, East Sussex and are suitable for all abilities, including beginners.

Here’s the painting I worked on alongside everyone at Saturday’s Full Afternoon Landscape Workshop. It’s still very much a work in progress and I’m continuing to refine it in the studio, but I thought I’d share where it’s got to so far.

On these workshops I demonstrate each stage of the painting as we work through the composition together, exploring ways of creating light, atmosphere and depth in the landscape. Everyone follows the same process, but I love seeing how differently each painting develops.”
