In an enforced change to our initially announced soloist, DCO is delighted to welcome Monty Guo, who is currently completing a Master of Arts at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Originally from Sydney, Monty is increasingly focused on chamber music and ensemble performance at a professional level. Monty has performed across Australia and Europe, and led conservatoire orchestras in both Australia and the UK, including at the Sydney Conservatorium and the Royal Academy of Music. Through projects such as Trio Nostos and his ongoing studies in London, Monty is establishing himself within the European chamber and orchestral scene while seeking to create distinctive, engaging performance experiences that bring audiences into closer contact with the energy and intimacy of live music.

This is an opportunity not to be missed to hear and support one of this country's upcoming younger generation of players going into music as their professional career. Monty's performance of Dvorak's Violin Concerto this Sunday 17 May (4pm at Cornerstone) will be an outstanding showcase of raw talent and musicality in one of the repertoire's unjustly neglected gems.

The four contrasting movements of Coleridge-Taylor's Petite Suite de Concert are full of tuneful innovation and melody, with a compositional style much admired by Elgar. Monty Guo then joins DCO to perform Dvořák's Violin Concerto – a piece requested by his publisher after the success of his Sixth Symphony and his popular Slavonic Dances. Though less frequently performed than others in the genre, this concerto remains an important piece in the violin repertoire. Max Bruch is perhaps best known for his Violin Concerto no 1, but his Second Symphony is no lesser work from his output of 200 pieces. The three contrasting pieces in this programme characterise DCO's mission to bring tuneful classical music to delight Didcot audiences. And of course, there may be an encore...

We hope you're coming to our concert on Sunday 1 March at 4pm.

Please be aware that over that weekend (8pm on Friday 27 February until 5am on Monday 2 March), the A34 / A4130 Milton interchange roundabout and all its slip roads will be completely closed for resurfacing. This does not affect approaching Didcot on the A4130 from the east. The official diversion, marked by diversion signs, whether travelling northbound or southbound, is to turn off the A34 at the Chilton exit, two miles south of Milton interchange, following signs to B4493. Then either follow your satnav to the Orchard Centre (Sainsburys) car park OX11 7ND or follow the directions below...

At the roundabout at the foot of Hagbourne Hill, turn left onto A417 London Road, signposted Harwell. At the next roundabout, turn right (Harwell Link Road) signposted Didcot B4493. At the end of this, turn right at the roundabout into Didcot Road. At the roundabout (tree in centre) with Foxhall Road, turn left, and at the end of Foxhall Road, turn right into Station Road. The Orchard Centre car park for Cornerstone is accessed by traffic lights at Sainsburys (sadly no longer free on Sundays despite our protest to the local MP).

Please leave extra time for your journey.

Over 60 tickets already sold for our refreshing summer sorbet of a concert - with Prokofiev's dazzling Classical Symphony opening a glittering programme of summery classical music gems. Lyadov's last piece then makes a lyrical contrast. The Czech Suite's five dance-like movements seem to portray summery feelings in Dvořák's homeland, while Lars Erik Larsson's Pastoral Suite evokes high-latitude long-day Swedish summers – the piece is written in a neo-classical style similar to Prokofiev's Classical Symphony. A true classic masterpiece concludes our concert – the charming and high-spirited Eighth Symphony of Beethoven, written in the summer of 1812 and popular ever since.
