Discover the freedom of charcoal drawing, a deeply rewarding process offering rich contrast, expressive mark-making, and striking depth. By focusing on light, shadow, and form rather than colour, it provides an immediate and immersive way of seeing and interpreting the world.

In a relaxed and supportive environment, local artist Hester Berry will guide you through essential techniques for creating atmospheric and dynamic landscapes. You’ll explore how to build tonal depth and contrast while capturing light, texture, and movement. Through experimentation you will develop the skills to bring your scenes to life.

No prior experience is necessary and all materials are provided.

Artist and filmmaker Jess Scott gives an insight into some of the themes behind their current solo exhibition 'I Think This Is Where I Live' 🏠

Obsessed with how we record and are recorded, how we view and are viewed, Jess' practice experiments with photography and film mediums as a way of exploring narrative. Their work is often biographical, observing their place within the world, and often using art to share and process personal experiences as a tool to connect with the audience.

Open Tues - Sat 12:00 - 17:00 until 4th July.

This exhibition is in collaboration with in Plymouth, and is the fourth solo exhibition brought to Studio KIND by a KARST studioholder. The exchange encourages artistic collaboration across North Devon and Plymouth, and supports Studio KIND's ambitions to ensure that North Devon is connected with exciting and critically engaged dialogues across the South West, strengthened by KARST's invaluable organisational support.

Zoe Hyde's work is vibrant, joyful, and deeply inspired by the landscapes and coastlines she loves. Her bold use of colour draws the viewer in to discover the carefully considered details within each piece. From sweeping fields and rolling ocean waves to soaring birds and figures woven into the landscape, her paintings invite a sense of joy and exploration.

Inspired by Zoe's expressive style, this fun and engaging workshop will explore complementary colours, mark-making, and a variety of painting techniques within an experimental, abstract framework. Participants will be encouraged to play with colour, texture, and composition to create their own unique artwork.

Suitable for both beginners and experienced painters, and all materials provided.

Zoe grew up in a remote part of North Cornwall and studied at Falmouth College of Art and the Kent Institute of Art and Design. Her vibrant work is collected internationally and has been exhibited at venues including the RWA and Grand Designs. Zoe is an Academician of the Southwest Academy of Fine and Applied Arts and lives and works in North Devon.

🗓️ Refugee Week Panel Talk with The Pickwell Foundation // Thursday 18th June, 19:00-21:00

This relaxed and thoughtful panel event will bring together members of the Pickwell team and their incredible volunteers to share real experiences of supporting people resettling in our communities. We’ll also be screening our short film and opening up an honest conversation about how we can all play a part in building kinder, more connected neighbourhoods. 'I think that’s where I live, just under and behind my eyes' - John Berger, A Fortunate Man: The Story of a Country Doctor

Inspired by John Berger’s 'A Fortunate Man', thinking about where they exist in their own body, this exhibition comes as the artist’s grandmother developed vascular dementia.

Exploring the intersection of identity, memory, and place the works attempt to preserve memory in order to keep identity intact. Film and photographic works are made up of a frantic attempt to capture and preserve the family home as it is emptied and returned to the council after 80 years.

Working as a community filmmaker, Jess has evolved their film craft whilst developing ways to teach film and experimental media skills to others. In 2024 she participated in the Exeter Contemporary Open with 'My Father's Daughter' - a photoseries that explored the historical pattern of women artists being erased with their father’s name. For these works, Jess shaved her head and borrowed her father’s clothing for a series of self-portraits, erasing their own identity.

Jess' exhibition I Think This is Where I Live is open Tues - Sat, 12:00 - 17:00 until 4th July at Studio KIND, Barnstaple.

Join renowned printmaker Merlyn Chesterman for an immersive two-day masterclass in multi-colour woodblock printing, taking place on Sundays 19th and 26th July.

This course offers a rare opportunity to work directly with an experienced practitioner and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers Council member, learning how to plan, register, and build layered colour prints using a simple registration system that opens up confident approaches to colour. All materials are provided, and the focus is on unlocking the full creative potential of the process so you can develop both technically and artistically, whether you are building on existing relief printing experience or approaching colour woodblock for the first time.

Merlyn was brought up in Hong Kong and studied Fine Art at Bath Academy of Art under Adrian Heath in the 1960s. She has since lived, travelled, and exhibited widely across Asia and the USA, and is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Merlyn is widely recognised for her contribution to contemporary printmaking.

We are pleased to announce our three commissioned artists for our Back To The Market project as Graham Taylor, Cecily Loveys Jervoise and Jessica Akerman.

Our 'Back To The Market' commissions will investigate the heritage of Barnstaple Pannier Market, concentrating on three key areas of research that we have invited contemporary artists/researchers to respond to. One commission will explore the events around Oswald Mosley’s talk that took place in Barnstaple Pannier Market in 1934, one will be linked to Jeremy Thorpe’s wedding reception that took place in Barnstaple Pannier Market in 1968, and the other inspired by The Beggar’s Opera written in 1728 by John Gay who was born in Barnstaple.

Laura Porter, managing director and curator of Studio KIND said:

'We're really looking forward to working with Jessica, Graham and Cecily to explore different aspects of the market's history and how they relate to the current day. Contemporary art is such a great vehicle for story-telling, sharing experiences, and shedding light on sometimes difficult topics. We hope the work created will both raise appreciation for this important heritage building, whilst also asking questions about the world in which we're living. The Pannier Market has always been at the heart of Barnstaple, both physically and metaphorically, and we want to make sure it stays as relevant and vibrant as ever by getting the community involved and reimagining the market as a place of culture, creativity and connection! We'd like to thank everyone involved for making this project possible, especially the National Lottery, North Devon Council and the team in Barnstaple Pannier Market.'

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Thanks to National Lottery players, we will be able to deliver a year-long project that provides research opportunities, fun activities for the community, and the chance for people to think more deeply about what the Pannier Market means to our area.
