I didn't catch the name of the idiot Tory on the BBC R4 Today programme, banging on about "blanket imposition" of 20 mph zones. I don't know what he thinks 30 mph zones are. Perhaps he thinks 30 mph is a universal constant like the speed of light. 'Blanket' was clearly the word he was told to emphasise though, and that's what he did. Short of introducing the work with a fanfare of trumpets, he couldn't have done much more.

Edit: It turns out to have been Mark Harper, Transport Minister. God help us if that's the calibre of Tory ministers...

It seems likely that Sunak is cynically preparing to abandon any pretence of strategic thinking in favour of buying as many votes as he can scratch together. He is literally selling the future, ours, our children's, our grandchildren's and generations beyond. I don't think he's even bothered about reputation. It's all about hanging on. The ultimate in short term thinking.
