Our lecture this month was by Mark Ovenden: ‘Around The World In Stunning Aviation Posters.’ It was a kaleidoscope of eras, styles and artists influenced by their times and subject. Some were so original, they influenced art as a whole. Although it was a race through these colourful posters, we found it easy to follow and enjoy.

Our next lecture is on Wednesday 20 May by Sarah Cove entitled “A Tale Of Vanity Fair: Constable’s Treslove Portraits Rediscovered”. 2026 is the 250th anniversary of Constable’s birth, and in this lecture Sarah reveals a story of wealth, vanity, fashion and politics.

‘Around The World In Stunning Aviation Posters.’ Since the first commercial flight in 1919, airlines have needed to show an initially wary public where their services run and in doing so created some of the most iconic and beautiful travel posters. Spanning a century of art and design a look at aviation posters which have inspired dreams of far flung destinations in vivid colours and styles.

We look forward to seeing you.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 15 th April 2026 with Mark Ovenden’s lecture entitled ‘Around The World In Stunning Aviation Posters.’

The next meeting for the Arts Society Devizes is on Wednesday 18th February 10.30am for 11am, at the Corn Exchange, Devizes.
Our lecture is on ‘Caravaggio: The Bad Boy of Barroque’ by Dan Evans. Caravaggio, a scandalous, sometimes vicious painter, produced work with cinematic compositions and intensely visceral details. His downfall is the stuff of a film not yet made and despite dying prematurely his canvases influenced a generation that followed.
Dan Evans has been lecturing since 2001, and spent 9 years working as a senior lecturer, tutor, and tour guide for Art History Abroad.

We look forward to seeing you. Visitors are very welcome - £8 donation appreciated.

We had another record turnout for last month’s lecture by Marc Allum, on ‘Brave New World – The Festival of Britain 1951’. His informative, breezy style, images of this historic event and encouraging audience involvement, had us all fascinated...and a number of the audience, who had actually been there, shared memories.

The Arts Society Devizes.
We ended our calendar year with a very appropriate lecture the story of the near invisible Joseph, Mary’s husband and Jesus Step-father, through his image in art through the centuries! This unravelling, with its changes, gave us insight into how people have tried to place him via the context of his situation, Christology and Anthropology.

Our next lecture on the 21st January will be by Marc Allum, of the Antiques Roadshow: ‘Brave New World – The Festival of Britain 1951’. Details will be posted in due course.

In the meantime Seasons Greetings to all!
