We are delighted to announce our first winner for our writing competition ‘Unheard Voices’, Karen Ellis.
Karen’s monologue will be performed on October 14th at the Greenbank Pub. Grab your tickets in our bio, it’s going to be an amazing night!🌟🌟🌟
Here is an introduction to Karen:
I have written all my life. Poetry was my diary as a child. As an adult I worked in the media and used words to help tell news stories.
After becoming a Mum I had less time to write and the only stories I told were in the books I read to my babies before bed or those I made up about a little family of monkeys who all happened to have the same names as my children. They loved hearing of their adventures and the scrapes they got in to but I made them up as I went along and never wrote them down.
Over the years I managed to sn**ch a few quiet moments to write short stories if an idea occurred to me or something happened in my life which I felt I could turn into a story.
Alongside words, two lifelong and somewhat linked interests have been history and genealogy so when I read the prompts from the Scratch Theatre I became fascinated at the thought that trees can live for hundreds of years and bear witness to so many changes, so much more than we mere humans. I started to consider the stories they would tell, if only we could listen. Sadly we aren’t afforded the gift of centuries but trees are, if only in one small corner of our land. Then I realised that this corner could actually be a microcosm for the country as a whole.
For me writing is organic, it grows and changes as we do. As our life experiences increase our words become an integral part of our journey and all stages are equally valid.
We are so excited to hear Karen’s words come to life 🎭🎭🎭
