How loud are UK fireworks?

Much of the anti-firework rhetoric comes from the opinion that fireworks are too loud and we have seen several petitions in recent years demending that fireworks should be capped at 90dB. There are many reasons why this lower limit would never work, but as the OPSS report into firework noise 2023 shows, the vast majority of UK consumer fireworks fall well under the 120dB noise limit.
Only a handful of shot tube fireworks (cakes) actually reach that limit and most actually fall well below that from a measured low of just 92dB.

Remember that the decibel scale is logarithmic and the inverse square law applies to sound propogation. Therefore if your neighbour has a maximum-volume 120dB firework in their garden and you are indoors with your windows closed, the perceived noise level will be between 40-60dB - far less than the noise created by a hairdryer. Wheelie bins are capped at 89dB and dogs typically bark at between 80-100dB. Therefore, the actual noise of fireworks, indoors and out is FAR less than some very vocal groups like to pretend.

Not all fireworks are equal. Trust the experts when buying. This image is an example of how not to be ripped off with low quality and outright lies.
97 Shots, mostly packaging with a ridiculously inflated price flag on the right corner. It'll be sold in the shop for probably around £120-£150 to make it look like you're getting a bargain. The gaps between tubes on the right hand side are simply to make it look bigger and more valuable. It's all nonsense and designed to deceive. It's a horrible part of the industry in my opinion and one in which we never get involved.
