Sera Hathaway sent us a collection of gorgeous new silk scarves ready for opening here in Marlborough. I met Sera at a trade show and her story really touched me. A mother and daughter duo with two strong creative women at its heart, created for customers who are drawn to beauty and get inspired by what moves them, not what’s trending.

Each piece begins as a genuine artwork created by Sera’s mother Lyn. It is painted, photographed, collaged and layered by hand.

It is so exciting for David O’Connor’s NEW series of garden paintings to be having their debut here at White Chalk Gallery. You have just over one week left of our current show ‘Terrain’ so don’t miss your chance to see these amazing paintings.

‘Terrain’ ends on Sunday 6th September and showcases the work of David O’Connor and Richard Wilson.

‘The garden paintings are an exuberant splash of colour at times vigorously applied in rich blues and greens balanced with more controlled pattern, attempting to catch the feeling of being in the enclosed space. The up-close feeling is achieved by drawing in the plants and trees into a rich tapestry of colour and pattern excluding any sense of distance. Come and get lost in the amazing glazes of talented ceramicist Faye Mayo. A gorgeous new little collection arrived at the gallery this week Faye Mayo

Ranging from £22 little pinch pots to more ornate small bowls at £158, they are just beautiful. Her work always presents a wonderful sense of delicacy. Marks of the making process remain visible on the exterior and sometimes interior - all referring to how our life’s experiences might shape us.

Contemporary jewellery by Louise Mary is perfect for any occasion. She creates stylish, handmade pieces inspired by nature and wearable for any occasion. Contemporary yet timeless her work is always gorgeous. We love showcasing her jewellery here in the gallery.

My personal favourite still has to be her leaf collection.

‘Leaves have been one of my most cherished sources of inspiration ever since I started making jewellery and silverware. In this collection, I used my specialist technique of fold forming to create the master patterns for the leaves. I aim to capture the essence of leaf shapes in a stylised way, creating classic, elegant jewellery. In many pieces here, I use brushed silver surface finishes, set off with polished edges which glint as they catch the light when worn.’ - Louise Louise Mary Designs

David O’Connor’s Wiltshire landscapes never fail to capture people’s attention and it has been wonderful to see which pieces are firm favourites/destined for homes after the show.

‘I came to Wiltshire to discover the world created by the painter Paul Nash and inspired by his work, have begun to create my own Wiltshire. My paintings are built up of many, many layers of paint almost like the archaeology of the Plain. They are painted from memory, sketches, photographs and imagined spaces. Not one scene but an image of the walk there and the walk back, from a distance, from above and from inside, all at the same time.’ - David O’Connor David O'Connor FRSA

The gallery is currently showcasing a wonderful selection of ceramics by Richard Wilson in our new exhibition ‘TERRAIN’ which runs until 6th October. Pieces range from £70 upwards and the collection comprises of more functional vases as well as larger statement ceramic works.

‘My pots reflect the spontaneity of the slipware tradition of decorating with coloured clays on semi-dry pots. Using terracotta clay and white slip, colours are applied in different ways, with brushes, sponges and slip trailers, gradually building bold patters around the pots for a loose, abstract effect. I have always found the work of the Impressionists - painters such as Monet and Matisse or Cezanne- very inspiring, as they invite one into their paintings through colour and dance as well as more contemporary colourists like Howard Hodgkin with his spontaneous use of colour and patterns. But my background influence is the patterns and designs found in folk art and ceramics from Eastern Europe.’ - Richard Richard Wilson

I love working with all the exceptionally talented makers and artists in the gallery shop. Judit Esztergomi is no exception! Judit Esztergomi

We have a few pieces of her meadow and flow collections here at the gallery which are such a delight. Judit considers herself an ‘honest craftswoman.’ Her aim being to offer the joy and love with which she crafted each piece to the collectors of them.

Judit’s shapes are light and comfortable to hold. Her decorative techniques all involve carving through or scraping back to develop the patterns. The inspiration for her work comes from Hungarian folk pottery as well as the country’s hill landscapes and her love for regularity, order, intricate details and plant patterns.

Judit studied ceramics at Kensington and Chelsea College in London. Do pop in to see and of course hold the wonderful pottery she makes.

FIRST EXHIBITION IN MARLBOROUGH

We are kicking off with a very exciting exhibition. This show features a series of new paintings by David O’Connor focussed on the terrain of his own Japanese Garden as well as the Wiltshire Downs which he knows intimately having drawn inspiration from it for many years. The landscapes are an exploration of the space, colour and pattern found in Wiltshire downlands. In contrast the garden paintings are an exuberant splash of colour at times vigorously applied in rich blues and greens balanced with more controlled pattern, attempting to catch the feeling of being in the enclosed space.

‘What matters more to me is the expression of joy the garden gives rather than a plant for plant depiction. What interests me is the painting as a reference to the world not a copy of it.’ - David David O'Connor FRSA

Alongside the paintings are a selection of ceramics by esteemed potter Richard Wilson. His pieces reflect the spontaneity of the slipware tradition of decorating with coloured clays on semi-dry pots. Using terracotta clay and white slip, colours are applied in different ways, with brushes, sponges and slip trailers, gradually building bold patters around the pots for a loose, abstract effect. Influences come from a wide range of sources such as Monet, Howard Hodgkin, folk art, ceramics from Eastern Europe and his local Dorset landscape. His forms are always intriguing and Richard is constantly developing his style.

‘I like developing shapes with colour in my ceramics, and more recently I have experimented with the jug form, for example stretching the design to almost a cartoon-like image and making them quite feminine in appearance.’ - Richard Richard Wilson

Words cannot describe how wonderful the White Chalk Gallery’s launch in Marlborough was the other day. The gallery officially opened on Friday evening in Marlborough at No. 2 High Street.

Thank you to everyone who joined me to wish the gallery well at the launch. It was really exciting to share the first exhibition preview with you and show you how the contemporary art and craft shop has taken shape.

It was a joy to see so many familiar faces as well as new. Many of whom headed home after making purchases, so thank you for supporting myself and all the artists and makers that the gallery represents.

Lilian from Katharine House Gallery Katharine House Gallery did the honours by cutting the ribbon on Friday. Katharine House Gallery is a long established gallery in Marlborough and both Lilian and Chris have been so welcoming to the newbie on the block. Their support means the world.

The reception I have received here has been wonderful. White Chalk Gallery has been going nearly 5 years and I am thrilled to have now moved it to the buzzing and beautiful town of Marlborough. My new neighbour Kat from the amazing shop Curate Curate has been just lovely and I feel at home here already.

Delicious nibbles were provided during the evening by the exceptionally talented Caroline Caroline Wrench - a great cook! All I can say is, Caroline is a creative powerhouse and one hell of a cook so if you have any event coming up then she is the woman to call.

Jayne from SunnyHill Flower Farm Jayne Manley - flower farmer florist adventures did the most beautiful arrangements for the opening so thank you Jayne for making the gallery look really special for our opening event.
