I made my first collaborative Gaussian splat and really enjoying how it turned out! (Interact through the link below.)
I gave a talk to graphic design BA students at Kingston University about my experiments with Gaussian splatting for 3D documentary photography.
At the start of it I turned myself into the subject.
I asked everyone in the room to photograph me on their phones. Different angles, different phones, chaotic projector lighting, I didn’t want it to be perfect.
A few HEIC-to-JPEG conversions later, Colmap to Glomap to Brush training while I gave my talk, and it actually came out surprisingly well, even with the wild lighting conditions.
This was a proof of concept for something I’ve been thinking about for a while: what could I do with crowdsourcing the capture for a Gaussian splat?
Collaborative 3D documentation.
Everyone contributing their perspective, literally.
I’ve got more ideas building on this. Protests, concerts, family gatherings, parties, fancy dinners, wedding first kiss, proposals.
I first got the idea for my current project. My work-in-progress ‘A London History of Facial Recognition Systems’ will have some crowdsourced splats.
**[BTW!:: If you hve ANY video or photo of the facial recognition vans around London, please send them over!]**
Has anyone else experimented with collaborative or crowdsourced splats? Would love to hear what you’ve tried.
