Year Four… The year we explored The Passion through the eyes of The Guard

In 2025, we looked at the Passion through the eyes of the Guard, and examined the extraordinary power of transformation.

What happens when the person tasked with witnessing a moment becomes changed by it? What does it mean to stand at the edge of something you don't yet understand, only to find that you can never walk away quite the same?

Some of the most profound moments in the Passion story belong to those whose names are often spoken only briefly.

In 2024, our third year, we explored the story through the eyes of three remarkable women: Mary Magdalene, Mary the Anointer, and Claudia Procula, Pilate's wife.

One transformed by grace. One whose act of devotion would be remembered for generations. And one who found herself caught between power and politics, and a feeling that something was deeply wrong.

Together, their stories offered a different perspective on the Passion, one that invited us to look beyond the familiar events and into the hearts of those who actually lived through them.

After exploring the story of The Passion through a contemporary lens in our first production, we returned to something a little more familiar in 2023.

This was a more traditional retelling, allowing the events themselves, the relationships, and the journey to the cross to take centre stage. While rooted in history, we still wove in subtle contemporary elements to remind us that these themes aren't confined to the past.

Stories endure because they continue to speak to every generation, and this production invited audiences to encounter the Passion in a way that felt both timeless and immediate.

Looking back, it's a reminder that every year has had its own voice, while remaining part of the same story.

2022.

Our first Walled City Passion asked a question that still feels incredibly relevant today:
How easily can a community be persuaded to turn on someone?

This production explored cancel culture, public opinion, and the frightening speed at which a crowd can shift when fear, misinformation and those in positions of power begin to shape the narrative to their own advantage.

The Passion story has never just been about history. It's about people. About the choices we make, the voices we listen to, and what happens when we stop thinking for ourselves.

Every year we search for a different way into the story, asking not only what happened then, but what it says about us now.

This is where the journey began.

Five years. Five retellings. The same story.

Since its first performance, Walled City Passion has explored the timeless themes of The Passion through a contemporary lens, asking us to look beyond the headlines, the labels and the assumptions we place on others.

Year One explored the power of the crowd, examining cancel culture and how quickly a community can be influenced to turn against one person.

Year Two returned to the traditional story of The Passion, bringing elements of it into the present.

Year Three placed women at the centre of the story, exploring their voices, their courage and Mary Magdalene’s journey.

Year Four looked at personal transformation through the eyes of The Guard, asking how one encounter can change the course of a life.

Year Five turned to Judas, challenging the idea of the ultimate villain and asking: what if there is more to his story?

Five years of challenging perspectives. Five years of finding humanity in unexpected places.

What will the sixth year bring?

WCP on the road! 🚐✨

During Walled City Passion, we offer outreach workshops to schools in the form of Forum Theatre.

The workshops encourage creativity, confidence and discussion, giving young people the opportunity to explore, create and express themselves in a supportive environment.

The feedback from these sessions is always fantastic, with the majority of students reporting that the workshops made them think about things in a new way.

As we continue planning for 2027, we hope to expand our outreach workshops to more schools and community groups.
