So I’ve been waiting to hear if this painting made it through the second round of judging for the Summer Exhibition…it didn’t 😞

Obviously I was disappointed but sometimes these things happen for a reason. And I think this painting has landed exactly where it needs to be.

I source references for paintings from all over the place. For this particular painting I reached out to after he posted a lovely black and white photo on a FB group. Luckily he was happy for me to use it. He told me it was his wife, Jackie, who he’d lost 4 years ago. Im sure Bill would have been as thrilled as me if she’d made it onto the walls of . But I’m chuffed that this painting will be on his wall instead.

Congratulations to all the successful artists! 🥂
It’s a fabulous exhibition - I’ll definitely be paying a visit. 😊

This is my latest painting which has been inspired by the life and times of our piano.

The piano arrived at the family home in East Ham, London just after WW2. It was acquired by my mother in law’s cousin Frankie who gave it some care and attention. This wasn’t an unusual acquisition in a time where pretty much every house in the UK had one.

After many knees ups the piano came to Kent for more good times. It landed in our home about 20 years ago - the last photo is where it lives now.

It’s a bit knackered and never stays in tune, but it’s part of the family, so what can you do.

‘3 Day Week - version no.2’

Painted this one a while back. Is ‘throwback Thursday’ still a thing? I’m saying it definitely is. Throwing all the way back to the 1970’s.

Sharing another older painting today.

Although I really enjoy painting objects it’s rare for me to paint a still life. But here’s one from a while back.

Artists have been painting still life’s forever. Often choosing particular objects that are steeped in symbolic meaning. Sometimes it’s just wanting to capture the stuff of their everyday life.

On the Tate website it says ‘Still life can be a celebration of material pleasures and often a warning of the ephemerality of these pleasures and the brevity of human life’…

Anyway, here’s a box of wires. 😁

Sharing some older work today as I’ve been deep in commissions recently.

These are a few that I keep coming back to.

I find it interesting how images hold memory. I try to capture that sense of something half remembered, just out of reach. I want them to feel familiar but not fully fixed. They are an echo rather than a record…

Anyway, I will have some new work to share soon! 😊

So excited that one of my paintings has been shortlisted for the RA Summer Exhibition! 🎉

This made it to the shortlist and now it’s keeping everything crossed for the next round of judging…

Another one of my paintings didn’t make it through- you just never know.

Thank you Discovering Kent for your kind words! 😊

Thank you Discovering Kent for your kind words! 😊

There are works of art that speak to us. Sometimes they almost shout, calling out to our faces, pulling our eyes toward them and making us stop. For different reasons.

Yesterday at the Rochester Art Fair I came across paintings by Louise Rieger that did exactly that. On those canvases so much was happening, yet everything felt strangely familiar.

I looked at them and saw the old prides of my parents. A gathering with a drink and a cigarette in hand. A small child playing in the mud, picking up crabs. A disco in the seventies where men and women dance together. Or two men posing for a photograph so unfortunate that someone cut off part of an arm. But those photographs were still kept, because they were not digital and nothing could be corrected. Sometimes they were the only keepsake someone had.

Her paintings look like old family photographs. Scenes from everyday life. Imperfect, awkwardly cropped images that somehow survived and became memories.

These works spoke to me. They told stories of other people, but they also reminded me of my own. It could have been my album.

I stood there with my friend Ania and we shared our impressions. She felt very much the same.

If you have a chance go there tomorrow
