We have extended our ‘Nocturnes’ exhibition until 15th June. So this is a great chance to view the sublime mezzotints of master printmaker Sarah Gillespie. The prints are created from Dark to light. As William Hogarth put it in 1753: The copper-plate it is done upon, when the artist first takes it into hand, is wrought all over with an edg’d tool, so as to make the print one even black, like night: and his whole work after this, is merely introducing the lights into it; which he does by scraping off the rough grain according to his design, artfully smoothing it most where light is most required…..

Josephine Birch has responded to our Nocturnal@the@ed exhibition with a series of paintings around motherhood at night. As she describes: “Over the last year, I have drawn the things I have learnt to love, through pain, frustration and controlled fury. Waking again and again, feet hit the floor, back muscles strain, scars pull.
I draw the long slow mornings; the garden glitters with night showers, incessant rain, the wren by the back door, the starling’s clattering past the window as mist burns off the grass. I draw the things that I notice more vividly than ever, though I work with more speed now, I’m snatched moments, zooming in, zooming out.
I draw us, at dusk, tucked u. I draw us in the dark, rocking, singing.
I draw us lit by the light from a passing car, that speeds up as we sit in stillness, casting shadows of winter trees and our heads leaning together. I draw us drenched in the dawn sun, through winter rain.
These works@champion this vigil. Night sentinel. Wakeful, insomniac, proud, new outlook, new
work.”

Each of these artworks are glass plates that have been covered with carbon and laid in the woods. As animals or insects pass over them they leave a trace of their presence that Martin captures and preserves as light boxes. No animals or insects are harmed or cajoled in anyway during the process. Carbon is present throughout the universe and in all living things. The time spent studying the ground prior to laying the plates aids Martin in his ability to capture these fleeting moments.

‘Nocturnes’ Exhibition. Artist Focus 2 of 3
Josephine Birch: Josephine graduated with a first class B.A. in Illustration and a postgraduate scholarship from the Royal Drawing School, after which she achieved a first class M. A. in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art.
Her body of work, for this response to our Nocturnal themed exhibition, explores the relationship between Mother and child in the stillness of the night.
Lack of sleep, body transformed and the rituals of feeding offer only fragments of time to paint. The majority of the works are small jewels painted in egg tempera on board that capture this fleeting moment in time in the early stages of a child’s life. A few large works are also included that beautifully illustrate Josephine’s mastery of the drawn line to simply express these quiet nocturnal moments.
‘Nocturnes’ opens this Friday from 6-9pm on Dartmouth Galleries Night. Alongside Josephine’s work we are honoured to also be exhibiting the work of Sarah Gillespie and Marin Prothero

‘Nocturnes’ Exhibition Artist Focus 1 of 3:
Sarah Gillespie. Featuring in our exhibition celebrating the night Sarah Gillespie is a renowned Mezzotint printmaker with her work featured in major collections. These include, among others, The British Museum, The V&A and La Bibliothèque National de France. For good reason… her mastery of one of the most difficult mediums in printmaking is evident in her delicate portrayal of moths, trees and the landscape of her local rural setting.
At a time when AI and the digital world replaces craftsmanship the love of the slow and steady approach to creation, Sarah’s work brings a quiet humanity to her subject matter.
As the natural world is increasingly under threat with moth numbers declining and rivers in need of protection, Sarah’s answer is not to bang a drum loud and clear but to capture them with exquisite grace and leave the choices to us about what we value.
‘Nocturnes’ opens on Friday 22nd May from 6-9pm also featuring inour show will be the work of Martin Prothero and Josephine Birch whom we will be focusing on shortly so watch this space. All work also available online. The evening will also be part of 8 other galleries opening on the same night in our home town of Dartmouth .

We are honoured to be able to exhibit these beautiful watercolours by Rosie Sanders on our stand at the this weekend. Having won 5 Royal Horticultural Society gold awards for her work she is considered one of the finest botanical artists of her generation. Working at a large scale she brings the drama and beauty of flowers centre stage to create heirloom pieces worthy of any collection. Dm for more info. Fresh of the easel for is this oil painting by James Stewart. Particularly apt for ! H:63 x W:1m 30cms. Part of the musical heritage of Manchester. We’ll be bringing it with us to stand 16 at the Fresh Art Fair, Cheltenham Racecourse next week from Friday through to Sunday. Thursday night preview from 5:30pm Do dm if of interest.
