Ford Hallam - Following the Iron Brush

Ford Hallam - Following the Iron Brush Ford Hallam holds a unique position in the world of fine art metalwork. A polite notice. None of that is in the slightest way relevant to me.

He is the only non-native artist to have been adopted into Japan’s ancient decorative metalworking tradition. I'm really not interested in debating opinions on tsuba with dojo experts I'm afraid. I don't care if you think you're the reincarnation of the progenitor of an ancient school of swordsmanship, or that your years of sweating running around a dojo give you special insight, or that your Sens

ei comes from a long line of battle hardened warriors all soaked in the blood of their enemies. I'm a craftsman and artist, I work with the objects themselves and they tell me all I need to know. The overblown ego's of wannabe Samurai will only get dented here. I've done my time in dojo's and far more realistic training grounds so I offer fair warning, I play dirty, I can be very sarcastic and I will use big, foreign and unfamiliar words liberally until you either go away or I get bored and ban you.

Hello everyone

Ford’s funeral date is set as 1pm on 9th September here: https://www.sharphamtrust.org/natural-burials

Followed by a wake at The Seahorse in Dartmouth https://seahorserestaurant.co.uk

In lieu of flowers Ford requested donations to Palestine.

We hope to livestream the funeral and make a short film to put on YouTube also - it seems fitting that we do so given that I spent so much time documenting his every move! If you would be interested in a livestream please let me know so we can see if it’s worthwhile.

Of course if you would like to come to the actual event you are more than welcome.

A friend sent me this photo the other day taken in happier times when we were opening the Atelier. I honestly loved this man so much. He was my complete reason for being and the loss to me is more than I will ever be able to articulate. I cannot fathom the rest of my life without him and the years ahead of me seem long and empty.

I’ve got a bit of silver smithing to do soon and an engineers gauge will be handy. When I get to that job I’ll show you how but I was going through the project in a half awake state at about 4pm one morning last week and in my dream I was annoyed that I didn’t have a nice vintage one to use. So before my breakfast cuppa I found this baby on eBay and in Brixham just over the river. It cost less than a new cheap one too! The other goodie is a sumitsubo, basically a Japanese carpenters ink line. Bella bought me this vintage one a for Christmas a couple of years ago and now I need to use it on some lumber so I’m restoring this too. East and west in my studio, as always

Diamonds but not a round one among them 🤭 old cuts do have their charm though. Setting them is just a little trickier than usual. And a little array of 18ct beads. I wonder if I can use the old granulation process to create a ‘bubbly’ pair of hoops

Hi it’s Bella.

This is a post from Ford on Patreon which I am also sharing here as you lovely people might have some ideas.

Aiming for Mukhansa

The picture here of a full Tsuba is a tsuba by the remarkable Kano Natsuo (1828 - 1898). I think it's one of the most sublime works ever made in this tradition. Its actually quite small, only 6.5cm tall, which is ridiculous given the art it packs in. It's held by the museum of Fine Art in Boston, USA.

I made a rather youthful attempt to capture something of its grace over 27 years ago and now it seems I'm drawn/pushed to return to the master's feet.

My teacher, Izumi Sensei, is a senior judge and trustee of the NBSK, the outfit in Japan that organises the annual sword-making competitions etc. and he, along with a few other generous supporters of my work, are strongly encouraging (read insisting) me to submit a piece in this years competition. This time it's apparently been decided that no original work is allowed but only utsushi, study pieces of masterworks, hence my return to Natsuo's Iris.

To date I've won 7 gold prizes (2022 being the most recent, with the dragonfly Tsuba below) and with eight comes promotion to Mukansa rank. That's essentially beyond contest judgement and below National Living Treasure status, so no small beer! If I am able to reach that far I'll be the first and only non-Japanese to have achieved this rank.

What Bella and I want to do it document the whole process, we're just about to film me drawing up the basic tsuba blank template in fact, and post snippets every couple of days here as I progress. When it's all done we'll edit the lot to make a proper film.

Now here's the issue we're wrestling with; you, our patrons here, are the ones funding this film making project, and after three years between us we've delivered a ton of material that is now freely available on YouTube. But it's essentially you 200 or so supporters who are keeping the lights on while YouTube viewers seem happy to simply consume everything for free. Such is the way of the internet 🙂

As I'm sure you've already worked out this project, the YouTube/patreon thing, is not in any way a commercially sensible enterprise. Each month's films takes a couple of days of both Bella and I in the studio filming followed by two to three days editing. So while we're busy making the films we're working at a significant loss compared to more sensible goldsmithing work.

Personally speaking I'm very torn. My health, as many of you will know, has not been great these past few years. I'm in a stable condition at the moment and if I'm careful my specialists suggest I'll be good for the foreseeable future. And that's part of my plan. But, and it's a BIG but (naughty puns being avoided here) I only have so much energy available each day and even pacing my work periods though the week is something I must be mindful of now. It's frustrating as all hell but its the reality I must work with now. 28% lung function, in UK winter weather, is no small challenge! and I won't bore you with the raft of other incidental issues that come with auto-immune diseases and interstitial lung disease.

You'll have noticed that I've not been able to make any actual films of me making stuff or create any project series for a while. These take a lot of time and are very physically demanding for me, but there are so many I want/need still to do.

I've thought long and hard about this and my future, what I need/want to do with my career, or even what my career is!

I feel as though I've done too much and worked at my craft for too long now not to try and document it and share my experience. I'm fortunate to have the support of Bella and her amazing 'behind the camera' skills in tackling this task but we need help, we can't do it all on our own.

We're not entirely sure ourselves how best to proceed, or even if we can, if we're absolutely honest, so we'd like to hear from you.

How do we grow the support base here, do we push on YouTube to garner
more support, and what would that look like? Do you have any other ideas that might allow us to expand and extend this project ?

Hello Bella here 🙂

I posted this in the tsuba making group and they asked me to make it shareable so I’m posting it here.

Ford’s being doing all sorts of arcane things today and has finally finished patinating this Tsuba (which featured in Tsuba school) the fancy way, he’s going to put it up for sale tomorrow through his mailing list but I thought you might like a sneak advance warning preview thing. He wants £1200 for it and an extra £150 for a signed and sealed box if you want that too. I guess it would be nice to have the real version of the one you have all tried to make 😊 it’s beautiful - I can’t get the photos to do it justice.

Email Ford on [email protected] if you fancy having it 🥰

17/08/2020

I've decided to delete my facebook and Instagram accounts as of tonight. If you would like to keep in contact you can find me on WhatsApp. Alternatively email via my website ; [email protected]

My YouTube and Patreon channels, and the forum, followingtheironbrush.org will continue as usual.

Thanks, it's been fun but I've got too much thinking and making to do in the years ahead so I'm out.
