Great show today, introducing our Radio Show, Listening Matters. Recorded at the The Flavel Arts Centre with Noah Lang, a founding member of the Actors Studio Dartmouth. Regular Listening Matters shows start on Thursday September 10th at 10.00 am.

Most conversations about the state of the world go round in circles. This one doesn't. Each week on Listening Matters, Julia Olsen and Stephen Kearney sit down with someone working on
something that matters, and ask them five questions. What do you love about your work? What concerns you? What can you see coming? What would you do about it. And will you take action.
Over thirty-five years of listening, in one conversation a week. Listening Matters, Thursdays at 10.00am .
On WaterWaves Radio, a Listening Matters Station, or hit the catch up button.

Julia Olsen and Stephen Andrew Kearney have spent over 35 years listening to people, in living rooms and community halls. Out of that came Listening Matters: a structured process built on a single observation, that in the root cause lies the root solution. Each week they sit down with someone workin...

What if the most important skill you ever learned wasn't speaking, but listening?

After twenty years of teaching how much listening matters, and twenty years of Tai Chi practice alongside my colleague Julia Olsen, I've put our studio's complete method into a book:

The Listening Body: Tai Chi, Deep Listening, and the Craft of Honest Acting

Yes, it's a book for actors. Inside you'll find the full training we can make available at the studio in Dartmouth and some online, the movement work, the listening discipline, character building from the inside out, and an honest guide to working in TV, film and radio (the things nobody tells you before your first set).

There's even a complete reference to the 108 movements of the Tai Chi long form, each one described for the actor rather than the martial artist.

But here's the truth: this book was never just about acting.

It's about learning to love and care for yourself. To communicate honestly. To be still, to reflect, and then to act on those reflections — not for money, not for applause, but for yourself. The jigsaw of skill, personality and ability already lies within you. This book is about how to find the pieces.

If you've ever wanted to transform your life — starting with the way you listen to yourself, your family, and your community — this one's for you.

The gold you're looking for was inside you all along. 🌟

The Listening Body — available now. Message me or comment below to get your copy.

Just got back from seeing Disclosure Day and honestly it was incredible.

After this watch, I’m still captivated by how the film celebrates actors at every stage of their careers. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve spent decades honing your craft, great performances come from truth, dedication, and passion, not age.

It is a reminder that storytelling is elevated when every generation has a voice. That’s one of the things I love most about this industry.

"Become the Legend – A Lesson from The Doors"

Val Kilmer didn’t just act as Jim Morrison in The Doors—he became him. He didn’t just study Morrison; he lived as him. The voice, the swagger, the poetry, the madness—every detail was earned through relentless work, deep listening, and the courage to disappear into the role.
This is the power of method acting: the ability to transform yourself into someone else—not by pretending, but by believing. And here’s the truth: You can do this too.
At The Actor’s Studio Dartmouth, we don’t just teach you how to act. We teach you how to listen to yourself, to your scene partners, and to the world around you—so that when you step onto that stage (or in front of that camera), you’re not just performing. You’re alive in the moment.
So, what’s your Jim Morrison? What role, what story, what character would you give everything to bring to life? The only thing standing between you and that transformation is the work. And we’re here to help you do it.

"What if a simple object could unlock your greatest performance? 🎭✨ At The Actor’s Studio Dartmouth, we train actors to listen, react, and transform—just like the pros. Try this: Grab a partner and an everyday object. Take turns redefining its meaning based on your emotions. No script. No rules. Just truth.
This is how you build confidence, spontaneity, and connection—the foundation of great acting. Who’s ready to play? Drop a 🎭 in the comments if you’ll try it!
