We had a fabulous time in Kingsbridge last night and so enjoyed playing the rich and varied programme before a warm and appreciative audience. Thank you to everyone who came and supported us. Tonight we play at St Mary’s in Totnes which is the most beautiful church and produces a wonderful sound. We know it will be a special evening and there will be wine and crisps to keep you going as well as a welcoming church out of the rain! What more could you ask for! We look forward to seeing you there!

The first of our Music from the New World Concerts takes place tomorrow at the beautiful church of St Edmunds at the top of Fore Street in Kingsbridge. Doors open at 6.30pm and the performance starts at 7 pm. It is a lovely warm church, a brilliant and entertaining programme, lots of happy smiling musicians and delicious wine and crisps in the interval. Wonderful Supporters of the Lyric Chamber Orchestra!

A huge thank you for being such loyal and steadfast supporters. We absolutely cannot do without your generous and continuing support for our little Orchestra. Please come along to one of our forthcoming Concerts in Kingsbridge, Totnes and Ashburton on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We will be presenting a unique and vibrant programme for your enjoyment which is full of colour, rhythm, and emotion.

We open in Bernstein’s New York with “America” from West Side Story — all razzle-dazzle and drive — before pausing for reflection with “A Simple Song”, Bernstein’s moving meditation on faith and humanity from Mass. Next comes Elliott Carter’s Elegy for Strings — a hauntingly beautiful, lyrical work that unfolds with restraint and grace. We end the first half with a striking arrangement by Bernard Herrmann, from his legendary score for Hitchcock’s Psycho. After the interval, we turn to the energy and power of Ernest Bloch’s Concerto Grosso for Strings and Piano Obbligato, joined by the superb local pianist and musician Alex Wilson.

This programme truly offers something for everyone — from cinematic drama to lyrical reflection — and we can’t wait to share it with you. Please do come along and buy your tickets either through the Lyric website or on the door.

Elliott Carter’s Elegy was written in 1943 and it’s sombre wartime mood is particularly apposite for the wars that are raging around the world today. The piece is a musical lament originally written for the viola and piano and then arranged for a string orchestra. A definite contrast to the exuberance of Bernstein and Bloch whose works also feature in the programme. The Elegy is full of soothing and lyrical passages promoting a reflective mood!

At our forthcoming concerts in Kingsbridge, Totnes and Ashburton on 1st 2nd and 3rd May we are delighted to be playing Samuel Barber’s beautiful Adagio for Strings. Samuel Barber was an American composer, pianist, conductor, baritone, and music educator, and one of the most celebrated composers of the mid-20th century. Did you know he started composing at just 7 years old? His most famous work, Adagio for Strings, was originally written as the slow movement of a string quartet before becoming one of the most iconic pieces in classical music. Barber also won the Pulitzer Prize twice, and his music is still loved for its rich emotion and timeless beauty. Few pieces of music capture emotion like Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. With its rising, sorrowful lines and breathtaking stillness, it feels like music that speaks directly to the soul! Come along and listen to this truly magical piece being played by the Lyric Chamber Orchestra

We have such a treat for you as part of our Music from the New World Concerts now only 2 weeks away on 1st, 2nd and 3rd May. We are delighted to have with us the wonderful on the piano playing Bernstein and being a sparkling component of the Concerto Grosso for strings and piano by Ernest Bloch. Alex is a graduate of the Royal College of Music who now performs extensively across Britain and Europe, often playing the forgotten piano music of WW1. Alex also performs with Trifarious Ensemble and The Sound World Group, and is a ‘Live Music Now’ artist as one half of ‘Duo Tutti’, alongside flautist Ruth Molins.

Bernstein’s West Side Story needs no introduction but Bloch’s Concerto Grosso is a neoclassical masterpiece! Bloch uses the Baroque rivalry of a chamber orchestra pitted against a solo group to create a vibrant and modern version of these two contrasting forces. A performance to delight, intrigue and entertain so do come along and buy your tickets now!
