POLYCHOR DISSOLVED

In 2013 Rupert Bond formed PolyChor (originally The EFL Chorale) as an ad hoc choir to supplement music already existing in and around Eynsford and Farningham, and many of its members also belonged to other local vocal groups. One of those groups, the Darent Valley Choir, held many successful concerts at churches in the Darent Valley from Dartford to Brasted. When that choir was dissolved in 2016 those members not already in PolyChor joined to swell its numbers. Since then we have performed a variety of choral music at either Farningham or Eynsford Church to large appreciative audiences. Last November we had our first concert for two years and everyone, choir and audience alike, was so glad to be back in operation. However, after the concert Rupert decided it was time for him to move on and thought it might be a good time to resurrect the name Darent Valley Choir following on from the pandemic. So with the agreement of choir members, PolyChor was no longer and the Darent Valley Choir reborn in January this year.

Looking forward to our first concert for two years. It's been a long wait and we are delighted to be able to perform once again. With a selection of seasonal pieces, readings and our special guest community choir Vocalise joining us, it promises to be a great evening.

It's absolutely ridiculous that indoor sporting activities can take place with people running around in close proximity, breathing heavily over one another but choirs are not allowed to meet indoors to sing socially distanced when it's been proved that it is not only good for physical health but mental health also. We were allowed to rehearse last September/October in a controlled environment when the pandemic figures were considerably worse than they are now. We need as many people as possible to sign the petition to have this decision reversed as soon as possible.

The problem:
The updated guidance allows only 6 people to sing together indoors. This gives very little scope for all but the smallest ensembles

The suggested solution:
That indoor singing activity in England be brought in line with the guidance from 17th May for other non-professional music activity and indoor organised sports activity with immediate effect. Currently there is no date given for when we can start singing again.

I would like the government to retract the guidance issued on 18 May that says amateur choirs can only rehearse indoors in groups of six. Step 3 of the roadmap should allow choirs of any size to rehearse indoors providing social distancing is maintained and COVID-secure measures are in place.

Due to the current situation in respect of the Coronavirus, it has been decided with regret to cancel the forthcoming PolyChor Concert due to be held on Saturday 4th April 2020. The Working Group feels that it has a Duty of Care towards its members and its supporters and we are not willing to put anyone at risk.
Our next concert will take place on Saturday 14th November 2020 at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Farningham

PolyChor was formed in 2013 originally as an ad hoc choir but has since become a permanent feature of the local area. The choir consists of singers with a wide range of abilities and levels of experience, drawn principally from towns and villages in the Darent Valley. We are regularly joined by singers from further afield who love to perform with us. We perform two concerts a year singing mainly choral music such as Fauré’s Requiem, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and more recently Britten’s Ceremony of Carols. We are currently looking to expand our membership - no audition required and it is not necessary to be able to read music. For further information email [email protected]
