A night at the disco: John Godber’s Bouncers comes to Darlington

Saturday night at The Majestic Theatre promises a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud trip back to the classic British nightclub scene with John Godber’s hugely popular play Bouncers – celebrating its 50th anniversary with a star-studded cast.

Set on a typical Friday night outside a northern disco, Bouncers follows four larger-than-life doormen as they watch over the chaos of the evening. From eager party-goers and hopeful romantics to dodgy dancers and late-night philosophers, the bouncers see it all. With sharp wit and keen observation, the play captures the energy, humour and occasional absurdity of a night on the town.

Starring Steven Arnold from Coronation Street, Warren Donnelly from Shameless, Stephen Hoyle from Waterloo Road & Heartbeat and Theatre legend Robert Stuart Hudson, Bouncers is a theatrical treat. Just these four actors play dozens of characters, switching between roles at lightning speed – from excitable teenagers and glamorous clubbers to DJs, bar staff and the ever-watchful bouncers themselves. The result is a whirlwind of quick-fire comedy, clever storytelling and brilliantly observed moments that audiences instantly recognise.

Since its debut in 1977, Bouncers has become one of the most performed plays in the UK, loved for its humour, pace and unmistakably British sense of fun. Beneath the comedy, Godber’s writing also offers a nostalgic snapshot of nightlife culture and the colourful characters who inhabit it. With its lively performances and speedy character changes, the show promises an entertaining evening packed with laughter and recognisable moments for anyone who has ever enjoyed a night out in the 80’s and 90’s.

Bouncers is at The Majestic Theatre, Darlington on Saturday 14th March at 7pm. Tickets from www.themajestictheatre.co.uk

Review: Castle Players’ Shakespeare in Love – A Dazzling Triumph of Wit and Romance ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last night’s performance of Shakespeare in Love by The Castle Players was nothing short of magical—a joyful, poignant, and sharply delivered celebration of theatre, love, and the enduring power of storytelling.

A return to open air performances, The Castle Players have thrown off the shackles of Bowes Museum and are taking this show 'on the road' - making it all the more accessible and putting the 'community' back into the heart of the performance.

Under the deft direction of Gordon Duffy-McGhie, the production captured the rich theatricality and clever charm of the original screenplay, transforming it into a vibrant stage experience that delighted from start to finish. Duffy-McGhie brought an infectious energy to the piece, balancing moments of comedy and tenderness with precision and flair. The imaginative staging, designed by Bethany Nutley and Emily Harrington, kept the pace brisk while allowing room for the emotional heart of the story to shine.

Central to this success were the two remarkable leads. Phoebe Lorenz was luminous as Viola de Lesseps—a spirited, intelligent heroine whose love of the theatre matched only her love for young Will. Lorenz brought depth, wit, and a fierce vulnerability to the role, commanding the stage with every appearance. Her chemistry with Oliver Smith was electric, at times hilarious and utterly convincing.

As William Shakespeare, Smith gave a performance that was both moving and delightfully self-aware. He captured the youthful fervour of a writer on the cusp of greatness, full of insecurity, longing, and poetic fire. His transformation throughout the play—from struggling playwright to the author of Romeo and Juliet—was played with captivating.

The entire ensemble supported the leads with gusto, and the period costumes and live music added richness to the world they created. But it was the palpable love for theatre—both within the play and among the players—that made the evening so special.

Shakespeare in Love is a glorious celebration of theatre, love, and imagination. Don’t miss your chance to be swept away by this enchanting production. Bring a chair, pack a picnic, and prepare to be entertained like never before - tonight's performance is at All Saints Church, Blackwell, Darlington.
