Hollywood’s most venomous rivalry takes centre stage in Bette & Joan by Anton Burge at Birchvale Theatre 28th, 29th & 30th MAY 2:30pm and 7:30pm — where the cameras may be rolling, but the real drama explodes once the director yells “cut.”
Set during the filming of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, the play drags audiences behind the studio gates and straight into the poisonous, hilarious and painfully human feud between screen legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Trapped together in a crumbling Hollywood system that worships youth and beauty, the two ageing icons sharpen their claws over every line, every close-up and every ounce of attention.
Bette is all ci******es, acid wit and barely concealed contempt. Joan is polished steel wrapped in glamour, armed with vodka, manipulation and a smile that could curdle milk. Between savage insults, old grudges and desperate grabs for career survival, the pair wage war in dressing rooms, on set and deep inside their own bruised egos.
Funny, fierce and wickedly catty, Bette & Joan peels back the diamonds and studio gloss to reveal two extraordinary women refusing to fade quietly into the shadows. Beneath the barbed one-liners and theatrical tantrums lies something even more compelling: loneliness, ambition and the brutal cost of being a woman in Hollywood.
By the final curtain, audiences may still not know who won the feud — but they’ll know exactly why neither woman could ever let the other go.
