Hand to Eye, Land to Sky brings together the work of Devon-based artists and couple Owen Williams and Charline Marzin in a collaborative exhibition exploring landscape, nature, weather and the human response to the world around us.
Working in very different mediums, Owen and Charline share a fascination with the shapes, colours and contrasts found in the landscape. Owen translates the places he encounters on walks through the lanes and coastal paths of Devon and Cornwall into expressive oil paintings and illustrations. His work explores the relationship between natural and industrial forms, using negative space and carefully limited palettes to shape and transform the landscape. Influenced by Fauvism and Expressionism, his paintings balance observation with imagination.
Charline works with stoneware clay, throwing vessels on the wheel before transforming their curved surfaces with intricate, colourful decoration. Inspired by weather, the unexpected patterns and forms of nature, and folk art, her hand-painted, wax-resist and carved designs bring a playful, poetic quality to both functional and decorative ceramics. Some pieces are wood fired, developing earthy and celadon tones, and some incorporate willow woven by artist Vik Westaway.
Together, their paintings and ceramics create a conversation between earth and sky, hand and eye, observation and imagination. Hand to eye, land to sky celebrates the distinct qualities of their practices while revealing the common ground that connects them: creativity and a deep curiosity about landscape and the ever-changing natural world.
