Crowthorne's biennial Carnival, with the theme of Planet Earth, successfully finished on 13th July, after a fun-filled week of activities. It commenced with the Carnival Procession, on 4th July, which went from Wellington College to the Morgan Rec, via Dukes Ride and the High Street and ended on the 13th July with a a 3 day Flower Festival at St John's Church. Well done to the Carnival Committee and all the participants who worked so hard to made the week memorable with events like a tea dance, ceilidh, quiz, schools music festival, gun run etc taking place throughout the village. A great community spirit which helps to make Crowthorne such a lovely place to live.
Sally Ballard, one of many talented floral arrangers in the festival, created a lovely CCS entry in the Flower Festival, representing the Tropical Rainforest. It was cleverly built around a pillar in the church to represent the fact that rainforests are multi layered, supporting many different types of trees, plants, flowers and wildlife. Sally described how they are the Earth's oldest living environments but now cover no more than 6% of the world's surface. To emphasise their importance, that 6% contains 90% of the world's plant and animal species.
The display, as can be seen above, had very tall top layers of exuberant green tollage, a midsection supporting bright exotic flowers, birds and butterflies, moving down to the damp mossy floor which is easier to navigate than a jungle, and supports many larger animals. Well done Sally.
We return to rehearsals on September 7th, for our Autumn concert, which will be held in the GWA at Wellington College on 13th November,
However our next event will be a Come and Sing workshop, on 26th September, in the Old Gym at Wellington College. In this workshop we will be singing Elgar's the Music Makers, which will form the major part of our Autumn concert. Come & Sing tickets will be on sale from the end of August and we look forward to seeing you there.
