How was your summer? Did you get to any story festivals? Did you take a well-earned break? Did the rolling heatwave fire you up with renewed passion for building community and tackling climate crisis in your story-work?

In this first online forum for the Autumn we’ll share with each other in breakouts what’s on our to-do lists, and our wish lists as the nights start drawing in, what we’re looking forward to, or being challenged by, and if we are wrestling with any issues that could benefit from input from each other. Bring a cup of tea and a snack, and get chatting with other story afficionados – and hear about some of the plans Adverse Camber is hatching as well.

LONDON FRIENDS - TOMORROW AND SATURDAY

Each year the @ hosts an annual gathering, filled with workshops, keynote speeches, talks and chances to hear and tell stories.

This year’s theme is “A Celebration of Cultures” and the gathering is happening at St John’s Church Waterloo, London from Fri 4 to Saturday 5th September.

Special guest keynote speakers on Saturday are SFS Patron Taffy Thomas MBE plus Windrush legend Doris Harper-Wills. With sessions hosted by Baden Prince, TUUP and a special House of Rumour Showcase plus 5 minute stories from the floor hosted by Sandra Agard, and workshops a plenty, there’s loads to enjoy.

What stories can be found in the night sky? ✨

Cysur y Sêr brings constellation myths to life through Welsh-language storytelling.

As part of the project, ten storytellers from across Wales created new Welsh retellings of Greek myths connected to the stars.

The collection includes stories about Orion, Midas, Ariadne, the Big Dog and the Little Dog, and many more. Each story is available to listen to as an audio recording.

Invitation to input on how National Lottery funds are being distributed in future to good causes

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is launching a call for evidence on the future of National Lottery good cause funding. Since 1994, the National Lottery has generated over £53 billion for good causes across the UK, funding elite and grassroots sport, cultural institutions and local community projects. They want to hear from the public on how this funding can better align with modern priorities, reach the areas that need it most and how we can reduce bureaucracy.

They are running a survey throughout the summer, and welcome views from individuals and organisations across the UK.

For Adverse Camber and many other cultural organisations, funds from the National Lottery have been vital in sustaining our work. Almost all of our recent tours and projects, such as the Storytelling Pathways mentoring scheme, professional development events, our recent tour and projects in Wales have been funded mainly through National Lottery supported grants.

For artists, schemes like Developing Your Creative Practice are also entirely funded from lottery sources. So we would love to see these sources of support for arts and culture continuing.

Opportunity for early to mid career UK storytellers 📣

As part of The Exeter Story Fix (27-28 November), there will be a Saturday lunchtime showcase of three "up-and-coming" storytellers. If you're an early-mid career UK storyteller working with traditional material and would like to be considered for this, there are more details and a short application form here:

This is a paid opportunity, funded by Arts Council England and Devon County Council and supported by Adverse Camber. If you can't make the showcase date, it's still worth having a look, as there's the opportunity to be included in a pdf round up of new voices / new work that will be sent to storytelling promoters and story club hosts in England.

Dr Anna Millen is working on a new project, Story Machine, which is a collaboration between several universities, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council which aims to preserve, explore and provide greater access to folklore traditions in Germany and the UK, through the development of a digital infrastructure. Anna shares more on what next week's Online Forum will be discussing and sharing.
