This year, for our sixth course, we had a full house of 12 students: we were therefore able to play bigger multi-horn arrangements than last year, as well as plenty of large-scale orchestral repertoire.
Once again we had a wonderful few days of music making, deep in the Welsh countryside, in the village of Llangenny.
During the first couple of days, already thinking towards producing a performance on the final day of the course, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries (expanded from the original eight orchestral horn parts to 15 horns - all in E) was one of several arrangements that we rehearsed. We also began to explore numerous orchestral passages from the repertoire, including bits of Mahler 1, Strauss Don Quixote, Shostakovich 5 and 10, and also some Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms: by approaching repertoire through the lens of specific aspects of technique, students gained invaluable experience of the many challenges that aspiring orchestral players are faced with.
The concert on the final afternoon was enthusiastically received by both parents and local people, providing a rousing conclusion to the week's work.
Next year's course is now in the calendar, and on the website: 14th-17th July 2026. Do make a note of these dates - bookings will open soon!

Day 4: we’re a day late posting this as we got caught up in all the final day busyness, but we had a super end to the course yesterday. The day was centred around our closing concert in the village hall, which was well attended by parents and locals. We had sextets, staff trios, 12 and 15 horn ensembles, and a student conductor! The highlights were 633 Squadron, and Coronation Scot in an arrangement written for one of our tutors, Simon de Souza, to mark 40 years of his teaching at Wells Cathedral School. The three other course staff members provided vocal percussion and train whistle! (See video in comments) This year’s students were superb all week and we were very impressed by their musicianship and social skills! We hope many of them will return next year 📯

Day 3: Everyone is working hard and absorbing the guidance and knowledge of our brilliant Horn tutors, Peter and Simon. Although the course is short, huge improvements have been made from everyone as individuals and as an ensemble. Tomorrow at 3pm, we will be sharing some of the pieces we have been working on. Do come along if you can!

Day 2 has been and gone! A busy day with whole ensemble and small group sessions, followed by a countryside walk with all the students, this time following a different route rather than our well-trodden trip up Sugarloaf! A supper of burritos was followed by our chef (and professional conductor) Ben leading a conducting workshop, with five students having a go at waving. Videos of that to follow at a later date. Understandably, everyone is now exhausted!

It's just one week to go until 12 young horn players arrive in Llangenny for the 2025 French Horn Summer School.

This is now our sixth Course!

With our well-established team in residence - Peter Widgery, Simon de Souza, Rebecca Holman, and our invaluable chef du cuisine and conducting maestro, Ben de Souza - students will be arriving from Geneva, Munich, and from within the UK. We are excited to be taking on an international dimension!

Our exploration of the world of orchestral and ensemble repertoire will follow our valued, tried and tested formula of in-depth sectional rehearsals - this year with a particular focus on orchestral music scored with 6 separate horn parts - interspersed with sessions during which we will play and rehearse a variety of large horn ensemble repertoire.

All this in the idyllic countryside of the Brecon Beacons - the perfect environment for relaxation and socialising.

We will be posting daily bulletins during the Course from Tuesday next week - do please take a look at what has been going on each day!
