📚🎶 This Thursday, step into Jane Austen’s musical world…

We all know Jane Austen the novelist – but this Thursday we’ll be discovering Jane Austen the musician.

Austen played the piano and sang, and remarkably, much of the music she collected, copied and performed survives today.

On Thursday 10 September, Jane Austen scholar and music historian Dr Gillian Dooley joins us at South Somerset Music Centre for She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music.

Drawing on her detailed study of Jane Austen’s own music manuscripts, Gillian will reveal what Austen actually played and sang – and, importantly, we’ll hear some of that music brought to life during the evening too. 🎹

It promises to be a fascinating opportunity to experience another side of Jane Austen and discover something of the music that would once have filled her home.

📚🎶 ONE WEEK TO GO!

In just one week’s time, we’re delighted to welcome Dr Gillian Dooley to South Somerset Music Centre for a fascinating evening exploring a perhaps less familiar side of one of Britain’s best-loved writers…

🎹 Jane Austen the musician.

She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music draws on Gillian’s detailed research into Jane Austen’s own surviving music manuscripts, revealing the music Austen collected, copied, played at the piano and sang.

And this isn’t simply a talk about the music – we’ll be hearing some of it too.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to step into Jane Austen’s musical world and discover the sounds that formed part of her own everyday life.

Whether you’re a lifelong Jane Austen enthusiast, interested in music or social history, or simply curious to discover another side of this remarkable writer, we’d love you to join us.

📚 Think you know Jane Austen? There may be another side to her you haven’t discovered… 🎶

We know the novelist. We know the characters, the romances, the wit and the wonderfully observed world of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma.

But what about Jane Austen the musician?

On Thursday 10 September, we’re delighted to welcome Jane Austen scholar and music historian Dr Gillian Dooley to South Somerset Music Centre for her fascinating presentation:

🎶 She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music

This is much more than a talk about music in Austen’s novels.

Gillian has spent years studying Jane Austen’s own surviving music manuscripts, uncovering the music she collected, copied, played at the piano and sang.

And during the evening, we won’t simply talk about that music – we’ll hear some of it too. 🎹

It’s a wonderful opportunity to step beyond the novels and encounter something of the soundworld of Jane Austen’s own life: the music she knew, enjoyed and actually performed.

If you’re interested in Jane Austen, social history, literature, historic instruments or simply discovering something you didn’t know before, we think you’ll find this a fascinating evening.

📚🎶 What did Jane Austen actually play?

We know Jane Austen as one of Britain’s best-loved writers – but Jane Austen was also a musician.

She played the piano and sang, and music was an important part of her everyday life. Even more fascinatingly, manuscripts and music collections associated with Austen survive, giving us a remarkable insight into the actual pieces she knew and played.

On Thursday 10 September, we’re delighted to welcome Dr Gillian Dooley to the South Somerset Music Centre for:

🎶 She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music

Gillian has studied Jane Austen’s own music manuscripts in great detail, researching the repertoire Austen collected, copied, played and sang and what it can tell us about her musical life.

And this won’t simply be a talk about the music…

🎹 We’ll actually hear some of the pieces Jane Austen herself played, bringing her musical world to life more than 200 years later.

Some of the music will also be performed using our 1840 square piano – an instrument remarkably close to the type of piano Jane Austen herself owned.

So this is a wonderful opportunity not only to learn more about Jane Austen the writer, but to discover Jane Austen the musician – and hear some of the music that would once have filled her home.
