Cranleigh - Nearly The Largest Village in England

Cranleigh - Nearly The Largest Village in England The aim of this page is to connect Cranleigh people, businesses, charities, groups and communities.

Cranleigh is the largest village in England, and is situated 8 miles south east of Godalming in Surrey. It lies to the east of the A281 which links Guildford with Horsham; neighbouring villages include: Ewhurst, Alfold and Hascombe. Until the mid-1860s, the village was called "Cranley", but The Post Office succeeded in getting the spelling changed to avoid confusion with nearby Crawley in West Sus

sex. The name is popularly - but incorrectly - believed to come from the large crane breeding grounds that were supposed to have been historically located at Vachery. The figure of a crane adorns the old drinking water fountain of 1874, that can still be found in the middle of the village in 'Fountain Square'.

So the questions are as follows: Should it snow tonight (I see nothing yet!) have we all got our snow shovels? Are we ready to be community spirited and dig out our driveways, pathways, roads (if necessary)? Are we prepared to put some effort in and dig out our elderly neighbours....we want to see everyone out tomorrow, digging ourselves into Monday so nothing comes to a stop....! come on Cranleigh, its this sort of stuff that makes us the best Village - working together! ###

When money was in short(er) supply, I used to think I could save money by taking my own photos (or asking a member of staff or student on placement to do them or me). This is so wrong in two ways:
