Cob Library is pleased to present etchings from British artist Faye Wei Wei

Faye Wei Wei
Stars, 2023
Etching on Somerset 300 gsm
37.5 x 29 cm
Edition of 30

“My favourite etching, Leo in a veil with our favourite deer stone carving from a temple in Japan. Little stars like tattoos on skin - when you etch all the waxy inky surface away with your needle the ink smells of mushrooms and I love the flutes and gills on a mushroom’s underside
belly”

Faye Wei Wei’s bold, poetic works quiver with a lively, lyrical motion, combining classical poise with vibrant immediacy. Often revolving around spiritual iconography and classical myth, love rituals and the theatricality of gender, her works sometimes suggest the themes of particular mythic narratives, and at other moments seem to depart into a more ambiguous, interior space of incongruity and uncertainty.

Cob Library is pleased to present sculptural pieces from ‘Monument’, a series of ceramic works by British artist Joe Sweeney. Subverting the forms of traditional tableware, the works compound Sweeney’s interest in the concept of the dining experience as communion.

The staggered, organic forms play with Sweeney’s certain trademark style - which he coins ‘kitchen sink surrealism’. Classical columns are reimagined; melding the grand and the crude to pass sardonic comment on the transience of life and notions of human interaction.

Exploring further the artist’s core concerns surrounding human isolation and communication, the tableware series sets the scene for the social interactions to commence whilst maintaining his signature tongue-in-cheek approach that is both humorous and moving. The surreal meets the familiar and the classical converges with the gaudy in this perceptive and unifying new body of work.

Joe Sweeney is a conceptual artist dealing with themes of human isolation and communication in the context of the contemporary age.

With his work rooted in a personal and wider observed struggle to communicate, Sweeney’s visual language often subverts Britain’s passion for nostalgia and a sardonic tone to explore notions of time, memory and permanence through sculpture, print, video and installation.

Cob Library presents this original collage work from Joseph Goody.

Joseph Goody
Negation 4, 2021
Woodcut and oil on collaged paper
26 x 30 cm
Edition of 15

Conceived as preparatory to his larger scale abstract paintings, these original collages have since become an ongoing series and body of work in their own right. They emerge as a continuation of the distinctive colour palette and textures that characterise his painting, and further the dialogue between abstraction and architectural figuration distinctive of his practice.⁣
