It is a complicated world we live in, politically and militarily...so, who better to get to the bottom of Britain's role on the global stage than a former Chief of the Defence Staff Field Marshal Lord David Richards.
And who better to interview him than the Isle of Wight's former Lord Lieutenant, Maj General Sir Martin White.
The title of Baron Richards's book, co-written with Julian Lindley-French, gives a strong clue about how the authors feel.
The Retreat From Strategy - Britain's Dangerous Confusion of Interests With Values explores our country's position - what's gone wrong and where solutions lie.

Britain's royal past and present is always a favourite subject at the Isle of Wight Literary Festival and 2026 is no exception.
From Alison Weir talking about her book The Boleyn Secret to Penny Junor speaking about Queen Camilla in her role as Queen Consort, there is something for all fans of the Royals.
Add to that Robert Hardman discussing his latest book on Elizabeth II and royal photographer Hugo Burnand letting in light on the secrets of snapping Kings and Queens, and it couldn't get much better.
That's not forgetting former Royal butler Grant Harrold telling us about regal etiquette at a Ruby Tea Party hosted by festival sponsor Seabourn

Support and sponsorship is extremely important to any event, and at the Isle of Wight Literary Festival we greatly value our backers.
Seabourn Cruise Line have been sponsoring the festival for a number of years and we collaborate with them to bring some fascinating speakers straight out of their Seabourn Conversations speaker programme.
For the -based festival from October 8-11, 2026, Seabourn are sponsoring sessions by crime queen Ann Cleeves, creator of the Shetland and Vera series (as well as her curated murder-mystery evening); broadcaster and author Clare Balding, who will be talking about her first novel, Pastures New, as well as two speakers with a royal pedigree.
Hugo Bernand is King Charles III's official portrait photographer and his talk on how he goes about his art should be fascinating.
Burnand says “A great portrait should feel like the beginning of a conversation ... an immediate emotional connection with the person in the frame.”
Meanwhile, Grant Harrold will be the host at Seabourn's afternoon tea party at the Royal London Yacht Club, where the former butler to Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, will give a compelling insight into royal etiquette.
Maggie Ankers, chairman of the Isle of Wight Literary Festival, said: "Sponsorship is vital to us, and to have a brand such as Seabourn on board with our festival is marvellous. They bring so much more than just financial backing."

Best known as the presenter of BBC’s HardTalk and now a familiar voice on Times Radio, Stephen Sackur worked for the BBC for almost 40 years and was highly regarded as a foreign correspondent.
Hard Truth: Investigations That Shook the World and Why They Matter is Sackur’s latest book, which makes a passionate case for challenging government, criminals and the tech elite.

Mary Portas shot to fame in the early 2000s as a retail guru who had transformed the fortunes of Harvey Nicks and was enlisted by Prime Minister David Cameron to do a similar job on Britain's ailing High Streets.
This is her first visit to the Isle of Wight Literary Festival and she will be talking about the book that details her Harvey Nicks' journey, I Shop, Therefore I Am.
Mary's story is fascinating, climbing the greasy pole of retail management and also raising millions for Save The Children by changing the fortunes of its charity shops.
Mary is bound to be one of the big hits of this year's festival, which takes place in Cowes between October 8 and 11, so don't miss out when tickets go on sale soon.

Britain's coastline is fascinating and in his new book, Dr Ben Robinson explores its rich heritage.
His talk at this year's Isle of Wight Literary Festival from October 8-11 in Cowes will bring to life his latest volume.
The people, places, history and identity of this "edge" of Britain is explored by the well-known archaeologist and presenter.
Known for slots on several TV series, including Time Team and Britain's Most Historic Towns, Dr Ben has become one of the country's much-loved go-to experts and has published another book on the villages of the British Isles.
