The Mee Club

The Mee Club A monthly true life storytelling club at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry, offering open mic and pre-pitched slots. The audience loved them all!

The Mee Club is a new venture from the same team who brought Tell Me On A Sunday to Birmingham. Tell Me On A Sunday was a true life storytelling club for adults, curated and hosted by one of Europe's leading storytellers, Cat Weatherill. It ran for three hugely successful seasons at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, in collaboration with Writing West Midlands. Storytellers came from all professions

and ranged in age from 21 to 60+ Some had performed before in other art forms eg acting or comedy. For some, it was their very first time on stage. They came back again and again, hooked on the idea of true life stories. True life stories are totally addictive. They are real and unpredictable, delivered straight from the heart. They celebrate life in all its complexity: the ups and downs, the regrets and the rewards. They make us feel human. They are wonderful to tell - and great to listen to! For Tell Me On A Sunday, the stories had to be pitched in advance. The Mee Club is different. There will be
OPEN MIC SLOTS for tellers. This means that you can turn up on the day and tell a story. If we find there are more people than places, we will simply put the names into a hat and pull them out. Please note that The Mee Club is storytelling for ADULTS, not children.

UNFORGETTABLE begins next week! Funded by the Arts Council, it’s a project that complements Death Awareness Week. There’s a cabaret show with me and the wonderful Ruth Graham, who is a comedian, musician and funeral celebrant. The show is true life stories from me, comedy from Ruth and I am singing some of the most popular funeral songs 😁 It will be great fun! Please come.

Every show has two free workshops attached to it, teaching how to create and share a story that celebrates and honours someone’s life. This is a skill you can use anytime - not just at a funeral! Weddings, special birthdays, retirement dos... anywhere there’s a gathering and you’d like to stand up and share something.

The project will be touring to Atherstone, Bedworth, Rugby, Worcester, Banbury, Birmingham (Smethwick) Codsall (near Wolverhampton) and Twickenham. See our website for full details (unforgettablestories.co.uk) There is also a page (Unforgettable with Cat Weatherill and Ruth Graham)

I know what some of you are thinking... Death? Isn’t that a bit morbid?? No... It will be great, I promise. Our publicity for the show promises you will go home smiling 😁😁😁

Our final workshop is coming up next Saturday! ‘Finding the Form’ will help you develop, revise or hone the structure of a seven-minute true life/memoir story. Find the right words for what you want to say. What will work best for an audience and maintain your relationship with them - from start to finish?

The workshop leader is Naomi Paul - a writer and performer of comedy, theatre, songs and spoken word. Her recent Edinburgh show Price Includes Biscuits received a 4 star review from the British Theatre Guide.

Venue: The Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry CV1 5QP

THIS SATURDAY

Here it is! The one so many of you have been waiting for! Tom’s ‘Back to Basics’ workshop on BUILDING CONFIDENCE.

Tom Phillips, this workshop’s leader, isn’t a pro storyteller: he’s a working teacher who has come to storytelling through doing floor-spots at various storytelling clubs. So he knows exactly what it’s like to stand up in front of people, palms sweating and heart hammering! He’s also learned how to shape and tell personal stories. Like most story club tellers, he was telling traditional folk tales before he met me.

So his workshop will look at two aspects of confidence:
• Ordering and shaping thoughts until you have confidence in the story
• Finding the confidence to share it on the night

The workshop is this coming Saturday: SATURDAY 13 AUGUST at 12.30pm
