Boudica Festival's Music Video Competition returns for its second year.

The Boudica Music Video Competition, where we invite filmmakers/musicians to submit music videos that they have worked on which celebrates female and non-binary musicians. Dedicated to bridging the gender gap in male dominated industries, Boudica Festival wishes to celebrate women in front and behind the camera so entries with a female or non binary director/crew member will be preferable.

The films will be shortlisted by a panel of online judges, with the finalists being decided online by Boudica Festival goers/fans by voting for their favorite. Due to the coronavirus we are uncertain of when the live screening of the finalists and winner will be but we hope for them to be screened at Boudica Presents event in 2020 so please note the screening date is provisional and likely to change.

British Nigerian director Jenn Nkiru, born and based in Peckham, started working in the industry at 15. Working her way up from runner/PA, assistant to music video director Diane Martel, to commissioning assistant at Channel 4 at just 20 years old. She then studied for three years, gaining an MFA in film directing from Howard University.

Nkiru has probably reached her widest audience so far with her work as second unit director on Beyonce & Jay-Z's music video for 'Ap***it' (2018). Shot in the Louvre, it shares themes familiar from her other projects. The centering of Africa and celebrating black art are integral to what she names “a new diasporic black renaissance'.

2017's short film 'Rebirth is Necessary', shot with 35mm film, references Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, Agnes Varda, Maya Deren and more. The collage of archive footage and dance scenes, shot in London and South Africa, explores Afrofuturism and the history of black resistance and invites us to question the present and to create the future we want. It won Best Documentary at the London Independent Festival.

'Hub-Tones' (2018), a nine-minute single-shot music video directed for Kamasi Washington, further demonstrates her affinity for marrying visuals with music. Nkiru has described this relationship as a constant in her work, "they each hold equal importance and often play character roles".

Along with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Elijah Wood and Peaches, Nkiru is a founding curator of Boiler Room's video platform 4:3. Much of her work is available to watch for free on Vimeo.
