Experiment time from day 1 of Chalke History Festival Chalke History Festival
As part of the iron age village with Pario Gallico Thomas Timbrell and Daniel Postma I'm doing a Pictish pottery display.
It's incredibly common to read in archaeological reports of prehistoric pottery being tempered (things added in to the clay mixture to strengthen it and prevent cracking in the pottery) with powdered quartz.
But have you tried to break quartz into powder by hand before? It's super hard stuff.... Rock hard in fact! πŸͺ¨
So something I've heard about long ago and been meaning to try was hearing the quartz in a fire, quenching it in cold water and THEN crushing it. I was amazed at how well it works! The stuff just crumbles to powder practically on its own. So new pottery temper material officially unlocked πŸ”“

SWACS what a wonderful community day of Pictish and medieval crafting and life at the site of coastal caves and very special carvings that have seen so much life over the centuries. Thanks for having me along to demonstrate about Pictish ceramics and textiles, I had a blast chatting to folk, and soaking in the Scottish sunshine 🌞

Do check out the tours they run at Wemyss caves on Sundays and by request.

Great to be amongst other Pictish crafters too! Hamish Findlay Lamley with leatherwork.

David McGovern doing stone carving (he made my lovely and treasured little Rhynie man stone that's in the 3rd picture).

And thanks to Isle of Angus Photography for some lovely pictures here. I always forget to take any myself! πŸ˜…

Peddling my wares as a medieval potter and what a blast to be at Traquair Medieval Fayre this past weekend.
All my history nerd dreams were fulfilled with awesome reenactors, costume watching fun, jousting spectaculars and hilarious, cheeky bird of prey displays.

It was a joy to be there and talk about medieval pottery and marginalia art with everyone who stopped by

πŸ₯ Presenting Sir Aquamanile and his trusty steed!
βš”οΈπŸ΄πŸ°

Modeled after a 13th/14th century aquamanile (vessel for the washing of hands) found at Lewes, Sussex England. I find it both comical and so cool that such detailed sculpting with clay was being done to create statement, specialized jugs for simple hand washing at the medieval dining table and by cleargymen.

➑️ To see archaeological drawing of the original

Sir Aquamanile shall be gracing Traquair medieval Fair this coming weekend, May 23rd and 24th in the Scottish Borders should you wish to be formally introduced.

Fun doing this simple little motif. I think they're adorable, and yes, I know it's spring, but autumnal motifs and colours are just the best, at all times of year!

The medieval wheel got its first official outing this last weekend for a fantastic day being part of Lanark Medieval Celebration this year. The sun was shining, there was everything from blacksmithing, to leatherwork, jewelry, lace making, owls, music, battle displays and herbalism. Fantastic!

I enjoyed showing off the humble skills of a medieval potter working a kick wheel. And I was really working on my coordination of working both my hands and legs at the same time πŸ˜… But lots of bowls were made that day on the wheel and it was great to have interested crowds as always. My legs are enjoying the rest post-event though πŸ˜‚
