“The first cello suite in G major, it reminds me a lot of nature. G major is such a pure key, and this music and this suite is just... it's pure, gentle, and loving.”

A BBC Proms in the North East to remember.

2026 took us from Middlesbrough Town Hall, to The Fire Station in Sunderland, and back home to the Concourse at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music.

Highlights included the intricacies of Morton Feldman's Crippled Symmetry, bringing contemporary classical to Sage Two, and the first ever BBC Proms performance of Mendelssohn's inventive Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings in D minor.

Now, a well-earned rest before we're back in September for the opening night of our new season.

Take a journey into the unknown!

Dinis Sousa swaps the baton for the keys, joined by Helena Gourd (Flute) and Jude Carlton (Percussion) for something we’ve never done before. An up-close, stripped-back look at Morton Feldman’s Crippled Symmetry.

No rush. No resolution. Just patterns forming, fading, and quietly returning. Like the Turkish rugs that inspired it, where the design lives in memory, not on paper.

Watch close, or let it wash over you. Either way works.

Feldman’s Crippled Symmetry, part of BBC Proms in the North East, Friday 24 July.
