You don’t have to be an influencer to be an amazing face painter.

In fact, you don’t even have to want to be an influencer.

Somewhere along the way, social media has made us feel like we’re supposed to constantly be creating content.

Reels.
Stories.
Tutorials.
Trends.
Behind-the-scenes videos.
“Day in the life” posts.
Showing our faces on camera.
Chasing engagement.
Watching the algorithm.

And if you’re not doing all of that, you can sometimes feel like you’re falling behind.

But here’s the thing…

You can be an incredible artist and have 800 followers.

You can be fully booked and barely post.

You can have a thriving business without making a single Reel this week.

You can spend your weekend actually face painting instead of filming yourself face painting.

And you know what?

That’s okay.

I’ve been face painting professionally for 20 years. I’ve watched the industry change dramatically, and I’ve seen social media become a huge part of how we market ourselves.

It can be fantastic.

But I don’t think we should confuse being visible online with being successful in business.

Some of the most talented face painters I know aren’t the ones with the biggest followings.

They’re the ones quietly turning up at events, creating beautiful work, making children happy, building relationships with clients and going home exhausted because they’ve spent the day doing what they love.

Not everyone wants to be a content creator.

Not everyone enjoys being on camera.

Not everyone wants to share their personal life online.

And not everyone has the time or energy to constantly feed the algorithm.

So if you’re a face painter who feels like you’re failing because you don’t have thousands of followers…

Please don’t.

Your worth as an artist isn’t measured by your likes.

Your professionalism isn’t measured by your Reel views.

And your success isn’t determined by how many people follow you.

You don’t have to become an influencer.

You just have to decide what kind of face painter and business owner YOU want to be.

And if you genuinely love creating content and building a following? Brilliant! Go for it!❤️

What a fantastic day at Porsche GB Club rally 🤩
The wind did nearly take off with our gazebo though so we had to hurriedly squeeze into the club gazebo , thanks to Porsche for being so accommodating 😍
Face painting and balloons today and the fact I was able to paint was a miracle as I woke up on Monday morning feeling like I was looking at everything through frosted glass 😳
Several emergency medical trips and eye exams including a fun morning yesterday at Eye clinic casualty , deduced that I have an eye issue meaning my eyes have dried out 😳 .. the heatwave has a lot to answer for ! Although in my case it’s a side effect of my chemotherapy .. and I must now put an artificial coating into my eyes every day , six to eight times a day.. 🙈
Mark forgot his trusty balloon hat , a rainbow bucket hat that also shades him from the sun.. it’s a good job I’ve got after sun in !

Does anyone else ever feel like social media has changed what it means to be a face painter?

Sometimes it feels as though we’re expected to be painters, photographers, videographers, editors, marketers, content creators… and somehow still find time to do our actual job ! (Which is creating magical memories )

I miss the days when our work spoke for itself.

Don’t get me wrong—I love sharing what I do. But every now and then I catch myself wondering whether I’m creating because I love it, or because the algorithm expects me to.

So I’m curious…

Do you ever feel the pressure to keep up with social media, or have you found a way to ignore the noise and just enjoy painting?

Where ever you’re watching from , nothing beats getting behind the team with a splash of colour and a bit of match-day spirit! Football requests have definitely been very popular over the last few weeks!

It’s been nice to have some time away from social media , I had a lovely few days away in Devon and then in N Wales and I’m now looking forward to a busy weekend 🤩

Exactly two years ago I was painting at this lovely party while trying not to worry about my upcoming urgent hospital referal for suspected cancer, in a way it was great to have my bookings to keep my focused !

After 20 years in face painting, one thing I’ve noticed:

The job has become so much more than face painting.

We don’t just paint anymore.

We answer enquiries.
We create social media content.
We edit photos.
We market ourselves.
We do admin.
We manage bookings.
We chase invoices.
We buy supplies.
We keep learning new designs and techniques.

Sometimes the actual painting is the easiest part.

I think one of the biggest causes of burnout in our industry is that people only see the few hours at an event and not everything that happens behind the scenes.

Anyone else feel like they’re running a marketing agency, customer service desk, and face painting business all at the same time? 🎨

A little reminder for fellow creators...
Lately, I've felt a bit worn down by the pressure that seems to come with running a creative business these days.
Post more.
Make reels.
Follow trends.
Show up every day.
Grow your audience.
Become an influencer.
And somewhere along the way, it's easy to forget why we started.

I didn't become a face painter to chase algorithms, win awards, or spend my days creating content about creating content.
I became a face painter because I love bringing joy to people. I love seeing children and adults light up when they look in the mirror. I love the creativity, the connection, and the magic of transforming a face into something special.

Awards are lovely.
Big followings are great.
Recognition feels good.
But they are not the reason our work matters.
Your value as a creator is not measured by your follower count, your reel views, or how often you post.
If you're out there doing what you love, serving your clients well, making people smile, and building a business you're proud of, you're already succeeding.

So if anyone else is feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to be everything at once-creator, marketer, videographer, influencer, editor, trend expert-this is your reminder:
Keep your eyes on the prize.
Remember why you started.
The people you serve are more important than the algorithm.
And the work itself is still worth celebrating.

You don't need to be an influencer to be influential. The joy you bring to your clients is enough ❤️
