Two day ago was Election Day in England and Wales.
People were going about their business like it was any other day. Traffic did not been disrupt. There was no heavy military or police presence. Shops were opened. I was just a quiet regular Thursday. Like I said, it was business as usual.
The polling booths opened from 7am to 10pm and you could walk in at any point to vote, pretty sure there was no long queue. All you needed was just a photo ID card, any ID at all.
To find my polling booth, I typed in my post code online and I was shown one that was about 1 minute walk from me. Of course, I voted when i came back from work.
Yes, I voted even without being a citizen of the country. I registered to vote a few months ago and it only cost me a few minutes online. I could have signed up to vote by post (they’ll send you a postal vote ballot pack with everything you need and you can vote at home and send it over) or by proxy (I can ask someone I trust to vote for me), but I wanted have my second voting experience in person.
I didn’t have to visit any voters registration centre to queue up for days and end up not seeing my name on the voter’s list. I will not be disenfranchised because the body in charge failed to provide me with a permanent voter’s card. I don’t even need a voter’s card, I could just show up with my BRP, international passport or driving licence or any official document.
I haven’t read any report of voters being brüťałized by fellow citizens because they look like they were from a particular tribe and they’d be voting for that tribe.
No reports of ballot box snatching. No reports of any violence whatsoever. Nobody is trying to buy votes with fish and chips. People went to vote peacefully for whatever party they wanted and went home. Their votes counted and whoever had the majority votes won.
I have been wondering when will my country ever get to this point?
