JANEY SHARRATT
Janey studied Environmental Design at Manchester College of Art before moving to London in the early 70’s. She worked as a designer for many years before teaching interior architecture at Kingston University, the Royal College of Art and Chelsea College of Art. Since 2000, she had focused increasingly on painting in her studio in Camberwell, London.
About ten years ago, having enjoyed painting many of the vessels she had collected, she began to explore the idea of actually fashioning some of the shapes and forms that meant something to her.
Although she loves canvas and directing the play of paint, she has discovered that the process of hand building her ceramic pieces has given her a new and different momentum.
An understanding of form, shape and pattern was essential to her in her life as a designer in London and, as she has now moved to Herefordshire, she is taking pleasure in the freedom she has to experiment with this medium in her new studio in the countryside.
Her mainly black and white pots and sculptural pieces are a very personal expression of her response to her surroundings, a method of self-expression and very satisfying new creative journey.
