Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed The River Clun Festival; the Ruth Angell Trio in concert; our first Artist in Residence, Ling Peng, who sat by the river playing her Urhu (Chinese violin) for Clun to hear is ethereal tone and quality, playing for her ‘breakfast’ in the Post Card Cafe and performing for us, in concert, with Surge Forward - Sid Peacock and Ruth Angell; Art, with paintings by the late Pauline Kiteley and Afternoon Tea; our Advent Makers Fair and our amazing Advent Concert. All these can be seen on our Past Events page on our website: www.waterloo.gallery/events

We have also been setting up our studio to hold ceramic workshops and courses in drawing, calligraphy and relaxation. Please see our website with more information: www.waterloo.gallery/courses-workshops

Thank you to everyone who came to our first Advent Concert.

We invited Gemma King, soprano, Lisa Besnosiuk, baroque flute/harpsichord and Richard Tunnicliffe, cello/viola da Gamba, to create an Advent themed concert and they did not disappoint us.

They played pieces by Purcell, Telemann, Handel, Praetorius, Marin Marais and J.S. Bach; after the short interval during which canapes, made by Debi and Penny and mulled wine, fine tuned by Ruth, were served, we heard traditional carols including the Coventry Carol and the Ukrainian Carol “Nova Radi Stala” arr. Beznosiuk; Gemma sang ‘Stille Nacht’ unaccompanied and many of us were moved to tears. Their encore was the Ukrainian “Carol of the Bells” arr. Beznosiuk, in which Lisa and Richard played bells to accompany Gemma’s stunning voice.

It was such an enjoyable evening and the most wonderful early Christmas present for us from the most amazing musicians, who just happen to be our neighbours. Thank you Gemma, Lisa and Richard.

RICHARD TUNNICLIFFE

In his long career Richard Tunnicliffe has performed and recorded a wide repertoire, drawn from six centuries of music. He was a founder member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, with whom he has been orchestral principal, continuo cellist and viola da gamba soloist, and was a member of renowned viol consort Fretwork until 2015. He now divides his time between solo playing and chamber music.

His acclaimed solo recordings include a disc of Early Italian Cello Music, the 6 cello concerti by the 18th century Durham-based composer John Garth, which is broadcast frequently, and a 2012 recording of Bach’s cello suites as well as 20th century works. He teaches baroque cello at the Royal College of Music.

Richard and Lisa live in Clun in South Shropshire. In 2018 with their daughter, violist Luba Tunnicliffe, they founded a chamber music series Clun Valley Music which brings internationally renowned artists to Clun and surrounding villages. For details please visit www.clunvalleymusic.co.uk

LISA BEZNOSIUK

Lisa Beznosiuk is one of the world’s leading performers on early flutes. As soloist and orchestral principal with many leading UK ensembles she has performed and recorded a wide range of 18th and 19th century repertoire, on a variety of historical flutes from her own collection. Her solo recordings include Bach and Handel sonatas and concertos by Vivaldi and Mozart, which have drawn much praise.
Lisa trained at the Guildhall School of Music in London where she developed a great interest and love for the wooden flute, studying with Stephen Preston. She also found herself busy playing harpsichord continuo, a skill which has proved to be very useful during her teaching career.

She is currently Professor of Historical Flutes at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School.
