SARAH AMATT

Sarah creates images using the ancient process of suminagashi which is a Japanese marbling technique. Working with ink, water and air, her designs are captured on paper and washi. She works with sumi, which is black ink, and occasionally with colour. Sarah creates work in her studio but really enjoys the open air on rivers and the sea.

MIKE PAINTER

Mike Painter is a Master Carver. He served his apprenticeship at Linford Bridgeman, an architectural and ecclesiastical company, specialising in the traditional crafts of wood and stone, where he became Head of Department. He continued his studies at the European School for Craftsmen at San Servolo, Venice in 1992.

Amongst other well-known properties, he has worked on Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, the Palace of Westminster and many National Trust buildings and churches. He also supervised a team of carvers to work on the fire damage at Windsor Castle.

Since retiring in 2021, he has been working on a relief carving in lime wood depicting Michelangelo's fresco "The Last Judgement" created in the Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Rome and we are thrilled that he has offered to show his own work at our Midsummer Makers Fair.

JANEY SHARRATT

Janey studied Environmental Design at Manchester College of Art before moving to London in the early 70’s. She worked as a designer for many years before teaching interior architecture at Kingston University, the Royal College of Art and Chelsea College of Art. Since 2000, she had focused increasingly on painting in her studio in Camberwell, London.

About ten years ago, having enjoyed painting many of the vessels she had collected, she began to explore the idea of actually fashioning some of the shapes and forms that meant something to her.

Although she loves canvas and directing the play of paint, she has discovered that the process of hand building her ceramic pieces has given her a new and different momentum.

An understanding of form, shape and pattern was essential to her in her life as a designer in London and, as she has now moved to Herefordshire, she is taking pleasure in the freedom she has to experiment with this medium in her new studio in the countryside.

Her mainly black and white pots and sculptural pieces are a very personal expression of her response to her surroundings, a method of self-expression and very satisfying new creative journey.

EMILY HOOPER-JARRETT

Emily cooks because she loves to cook.

Her influences come from the natural world, foraging, and what she grows in her garden. She is influenced by chefs on Instagram. Emily has been cooking for others since she was a teenager, and her experience includes festival catering; café work; yoga retreats and wellness courses; she is a personal chef to a client with chronic health issues with ever changing symptoms.

Most of her recipes are gluten free and she takes great delight that no-one can tell. Emily loves everything about making food and, even if her day has not gone well, she will always find joy in cooking; it is her escape and she is constantly thinking about it.

She is passionate about sharing the amazing things that are on offer in the Clun Valley; in the hedgerow and woodland, through foraging; meat that is being reared by our local farmers; fantastic produce that is being grown locally, including dairy; food that is ‘of the land and of the area’, and is of spectacularly good quality.

Emily loves making healthy, colourful and nutritious, sensory delights for us all to enjoy.

LUCI CLARK

Luci is a glass artist whose work is deeply rooted in the natural world. Following studying Landscape Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art, she discovered glass and its interplay with light, colour and the inherent luminescence of glass.

Working in both leaded and copper-foiled techniques, Luci combines traditional methods such as kiln-fired glass painting – practiced since medieval times – with more contemporary processes including acid etching, screen printing and sandblasting. Her pieces range from commissions for windows and medium scale hanging panels to delicately hand painted suncatchers, each one a celebration of the natural world.

KIM DAVIS

The simplicity of Kim’s vessel forms displays the grain and natural colour of the woods being used. His making is a response to the nature of the wood and is intuitive and emotional rather than prescriptive and defining; the form that emerges is a reaction to the wood being used. Although a vessel maker, his concern is with the form and surface, function becomes peripheral.

Kim’s products range from bud vases and lidded boxes to larger bowls, vases and platters, to large statement pieces, including natural edge pieces.

Primarily he likes to make shavings.
