There are musicians who play the songs… and then there are musicians who were PART OF THE STORY.
KATIE SPENCER & ALAN THOMSON
LIVE AT BARNOLDSWICK MUSIC & ARTS CENTRE
If the music of JOHN MARTYN means something to you — Solid Air, May You Never, One World, Small Hours, Bless The Weather, Grace & Danger — then you really need to know about this very special night.
ALAN THOMSON wasn't watching the John Martyn story from the sidelines. He was right there in the middle of it.
Alan spent years touring, recording and making music alongside the legendary John Martyn, his wonderfully expressive fretless bass becoming part of that extraordinary musical landscape where folk collided with jazz, blues, rock and improvisation.
And MARTIN BARRE fans will know exactly how special Alan is too. Alan has also been a major musical collaborator with the legendary former Jethro Tull guitarist, bringing that unmistakable musicianship to another great chapter of British progressive, folk and rock history.
This is a musician who has spent a lifetime being called upon when world-class artists want something DIFFERENT. SOMETHING SPECIAL. SOMETHING MUSICAL.
And now he's coming back to our tiny cellar in Barnoldswick.
Joining Alan is the quite extraordinary KATIE SPENCER — a guitarist and songwriter whose music seems almost perfectly designed to inhabit the same late-night world as John Martyn.
Think beautiful fingerpicked acoustic guitar…jazz-inflected chords…
space and atmosphere…echoes of Bert Jansch and Michael Chapman…the songwriting sensitivity of Joni Mitchell…
…and that wonderful sense that absolutely NOTHING needs to be rushed.
Katie and Alan's acclaimed Hurt In Your Heart project explored John Martyn's music with enormous affection and sensitivity, including a breathtaking interpretation of the atmospheric masterpiece “Small Hours.”
This is John Martyn's musical DNA being passed from one generation to another.
Alan brings the memories, experience and instinct of actually having made music alongside John.
Katie brings a new generation of songwriting and extraordinary acoustic guitar playing.
Together they create something genuinely beautiful.
And imagine hearing it UP CLOSE in the intimate surroundings of Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre.
Two exceptional musicians, beautiful instruments, wonderful songs and an audience close enough to hear every movement of the strings.
If your record collection contains John Martyn, Jethro Tull, Martin Barre, Pentangle, Bert Jansch, Joni Mitchell, Michael Chapman, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake or Richard Thompson…
You may just have found your night.
Please share this with the John Martyn, Jethro Tull, Martin Barre and British folk lovers in your life.
