Gouache is created using a pigment (a pure colour) and a binder such as honey or gum arabic. The binder helps to create an opaque effect. This differs from water colour which is basically pigment and water - hence you can an achieve a translucent effect. Gouache can be applied with more water to give a lighter effect.
