We were lucky enough to have Rise Kagona's Jit Jive music play at our little festival about 15 years ago. RIse was ace, generous, funny and played a wicked set.

There's a go-fund me page to help repatriate his body to his family in Zimbabwe.

Please consider supporting it if you saw Rise at Rough Beats Festival or if you were a fan of the incredible Bhundu Boys.

The Zimbabwean music industry is in mourning following the passing of Rise Kagona, the pioneering guitarist and founding member of the legendary Bhundu Boys. Kagona died in Scotland at 62, leaving behind a transformative legacy that reshaped African music. Born on May 17, 1962, in Malawi, Kagona’s...

I'm deeply saddened to confirm that Rise Kagona passed away, most likely on 14th September, at his home in Edinburgh.

Rise had a cough that wouldn't go away for several months, and he also started noticing shortness of breath. These were warning signs of very high blood pressure and a damaged heart. He was in hospital for a week, and returned home on the 12th feeling a little better. However, worried that he hadn't responded to us on Saturday, I visited, and found him dead, most likely by a sudden heart attack.

He will be missed by so so many people - his former Bhundu Boy band members Washington Kavhai, Kenny Chitsvatsva, Kuda Matimba, and Gordin "Camboko" Mapika, the many musicians here in the UK who had the joy of learning from him and performing with him, his large network of friends in the community here who helped him feel at home during his long stay here, and of course millions of people worldwide who saw or listened to Rise sing his songs with the Bhundu Boys and with musicians here.

Most of all, he'll be missed by his family - his 3 kids, grandchildren, brother and sisters, and more.

It seems only fitting that Rise should go home now, to be buried by his family. We've set up a gofund.me link where you can donate if you like to, to help us with these costs.

Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Dubinski is an indie rock band consisting of four brothers: Eugene, Fergus, Donal, and Eoin Gaine. Originally from Settle, the band moved to the Highlands early in their childhood, where through their isolation and developing love of music, they inevitably started playing music together.

Eventually moving to Edinburgh to study, the brothers took their music from the bedroom to the studio, releasing EPs ‘Wash Away’, ‘Wake Up In A Dream’ and ‘Moving In Slow Motion’, and spent several years playing shows throughout the UK under the name Ded Rabbit. Says the band, “as kids, after we booked our first show, our mother answered a call from a local journalist who asked what our band was called. Unbeknown to us, she quickly responded ‘Ded Rabbit’, hung up the phone, and the name just sort of stuck”. Sadly, their mother passed away a few years ago, which gave the brothers pause to reflect. Now with their debut full-length album in hand, recorded at RAK Studios in London with Grammy Award winning producers Mike Horner and Robbie Nelson, the brothers are not just raising their musical bar, but paying tribute to their late mother, Eugenia Dubinski, taking on her maiden name by renaming themselves Dubinski. The band is now gearing up for the release of their debut album in the Summer of 2022.
