“Board of Dinner”: Annual General Eating 🍽️
An Agentic AI-generated dinner exploring how Explainable AI (XAI) fosters empathy.

We are making an immersive dinner to conclude our ‘XAI for Empathy’ creative experiment, in which AI agents role-played as a “board of directors” made up of classic fairy tale characters.

Together, they simulated how different personalities negotiate and collaborate to generate unique recipes and meeting minutes.

After our exhibition at the London Design Festival, the Dutch Design Week and Hong Kong Design Centre. We are finally cooking the actual dishes derived from these AI results!

Join us as our “shareholders” to taste and evaluate the AI’s work. Your feedback on this edible experience will directly validate our action research on whether AI can build human empathy.

Our very first experimental dinner is by private invitation and is currently full. But don’t worry! Spots may open up, and we hope to host multiple dinners in the future.

As we look through a kaleidoscope of shattered sugar pieces hammered from edible sculptures of old Hong Kong landmarks... 🍬✨

You may have noticed we’ve been a little quiet on here lately. Since resuming our work in London, we’ve been deep in a period of strategic and conceptual exploration. While these reflections don’t always take the form of an immediate project, they are the vital seeds for everything we are building next.

Our latest blog post, “On Edibility and the Edibles,” is a genuine reflection on where Deep Food is now.

To us, edibility is more than just consumption. It is a host for a loop involving embodied experience, reflective meaning, and conceptual articulation—none of them separated; all are edible. We are more excited than ever about Edibility as a tool for expanded possibilities on how we think, relate, and act in the world.

We are currently translating these thoughts into new food-mediated situations that we will continue to create in the real world. The future is edible! 🌏🥣

Read the full reflection at the link in our bio. Stay tuned for new project updates coming very soon.

Thanks to the Aberdeen community!

Our immersive food experience was made possible by supports from so many amazing people of the Aberdeen community, thank you to everyone who helped and shared us with memories of the harbour!

The ”Hong Kong Aberdeen Boat People Story Sharing and Creative Experiment“ community workshop was designed to invite members of the Aberdeen boat people community, their descendants, and individuals involved in the local fishery industry to actively participate in Deep Foodʼs creative process. The workshop encouraged participants to share their memories and stories related to the sea, fishing, and the unique lifestyle of the boat-dwellers, using various types of dried seafood as sensory triggers and conversation starters. During the creative experiment segment, the Deep Food team demonstrates their initial concepts for food-art performance and the process of making prints with dried seafood. These activities serve as a catalyst for storytelling and deeper engagement.

The stories and experiences collected from participants become a primary source of inspiration for the subsequent interactive installation artwork, as well as for the immersive food experience
performances.

Secret Remedies Sought Amid the Waves

‘Even boat-dwellers get seasick. I remember going out to sea as a child—sometimes I’d feel queasy even when the water was calm, and it was worse when the boat was still...
So we turned to a family folk remedy based on “like nourishes like”: weak legs, eat pig’s feet; need brain power, eat pig’s brain. For seasickness, we relied on brown-spot grouper. Groupers like this variety hug the seabed year-round, steady and settled...’

Aberdeen Harbour’s Shared Tastes

The storyteller says: On a small fishing boat, there was a child who loved to climb to the very top of the mast and look out at the sea from about ten meters up. In his eyes, the view from there was more moving than any luxury home’s sea view. Before him was nothing but deep blue, the sea on all sides.
Standing in that “one-foot VIP” spot, he was in charge of “spotting fish,” searching for and fixing his gaze on great dark masses of fishes larger than the boat. Those shadows were like clouds—expanding, contracting, gathering or scattering. When he found his target, he would skillfully make a hand signal to his sister on deck, and the boat would head toward where the shadows were. That was when his sister would “listen for fish”: if her hearing was sharp enough, she’d press her ear to the deck, and if the fishes were beneath the boat, she could hear their calls—the sound drawing nearer, like listening to the sea breathe. Then down go the lines, up come the lines, haul in, haul again, until the boat brimmed with the catch. Day after day, that’s how they made a living, feeding everyone aboard.

“In the old days when we boat-dwellers fished, the best of the catch always went to market. It was only when we grew up that we learned what the finest fish really tasted like.” As for soldierfish, mantis shrimp, crabs, and the like, they were often shared by nearby trawlers or sold on the cheap. That’s how the boat-dwellers community was: you lend me a hand, I’ll share some good things with you, and everyone enjoys the tastes of the sea together.

Sharing the mysterious sea snake in Halloween 🎃

Foggy Days Are for Nourishment🌫️🌫️🌫️❗️❗️

Mr. Storyteller says: if you head out to sea every day, it’s impossible to expect fine weather each time. The ocean won’t always oblige. Sometimes the weather changes faster than you could ever imagine — one minute the sky is cloudless, and the next minute a violent squall blows up. Boat-dwellers have their own vocabulary, especially for weather that’s closely tied to life at sea. That sudden “stone-lake strike” refers to fierce winds with thunder and lightning — fierce in its onset and arriving without warning, powerful enough to capsize a boat. Or you might be sailing along when the fog begins to thicken...

🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️🌫️
At first, the world around you turns hazy, a cool dampness settling on your skin. Then the moisture gathers and thickens, as if you’ve stepped into a cloud — you can practically taste the water in each breath. Before long the fog congeals into a blank white wall, and you can’t see a thing ahead.

Usually, when a foggy day sets in and the sea lies calm without a swell, “slow sea snakes” appear. Sea snakes live in the ocean, and when they turn up they love to coil around a boat’s rudder — perhaps because the hull is smooth and there is little else to cling to. A sea snake can grow to several catties in weight; once it wraps itself around you, the boat’s speed drops sharply — hence the name “slow sea snake.” Sometimes you will see one spinning lazily across the fog-shrouded surface, its black-and-yellow banded body easy to spot.‼️

Sea snakes look quite distinctive, rather different from their land-dwelling cousins. Perhaps because they need to swim like fish, their tails are flatter, their heads narrower than their bodies, and their trunks can be thicker than an arm. When sea snakes appear, there’s no need for a hook — catch sight of one, scoop it up with a net, and you’ve got yourself a delicacy!😈😈

Immersive Food Experience
“Aberdeen Fishing Dreams”

A dreamlike ferry ride takes the audience on a journey that revisits memories of the past...

Through creative reinterpretations of bygone ingredients and dining culture, Deep Food presents a realm that is both real and surreal—much like the duo listening to their grandfather and grandaunt recount stories of their life on the water, entering the intricate world of their memories. While the ingredients and scenes from these stories can no longer be recreated, listening to such recollections feels like stepping into a dream that invites us to fill in the details with our imagination.

From tales of free-spirited love blossoming between neighboring boats, to mischievous episodes of life on houseboats, each recollection reveals the unique intimacy and camaraderie of the boat people’s community, inviting us to reflect on our own relationships within today’s onshore neighborhoods. The experience unfolds an evocative fantasia, transporting participants back in time to savor the essence of days gone by.
