Track to Heaven (2025) by Shirin Abedinirad

This land once held the dream of connection — a bold line drawn across a vast and divided place. Where East met West, and a railway was laid with hands, hope, and the belief that movement could bring us closer.

And yet, there was sky above us all along, whole, borderless and undivided.

We, down here, keep drawing lines.
Between left and right.
Between belief and disbelief.
Between one another.

We keep trying to connect with words, with votes, with anger, with longing.
And still, we often miss what’s right above us: a sky that never needed fixing. A sky that holds everything at once.

This mirrored rail offers no answers, only a quiet invitation to pause.
To look up.
To feel the stillness between the noise.
And to remember that sometimes, the most powerful movement is not forward, but inward.

Former GAZELL.iO residents Sian Fan and Auriea Harvey are currently featured in New Rituals [for the End of the World] at HEK (House of Electronic Arts), curated by Anan Fries and Marlene Wenger.

Bringing together artists working across mythology, technology, spirituality, and speculative futures, the exhibition explores how ritual practices emerge in response to contemporary ecological, political, and digital realities. Through immersive and technologically mediated works, Fan and Harvey examine embodiment, identity, virtual worlds, and forms of collective imagination.

Shirin Abedinirad’s Reflective Journey VR (2024) extends the artist’s site-specific land art practice into an immersive virtual environment, where mirrored pathways, shifting horizons, and responsive landscapes unfold through the viewer’s movement.

Originally conceived on a remote island inaccessible to many, the work was reimagined in virtual reality for Art Dubai Digital 2024, curated by Auronda Scalera and Alfredo Cramerotti.

Blurring the boundaries between physical and digital space, Reflective Journey VR invites audiences into a contemplative experience centred on reflection, transformation, and our relationship with the natural world.

GAZELL.iO resident Shirin Abedinirad’s Reflective Journey transforms the remains of three salvaged doors from the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake in Adiyaman, Turkey, into a quiet meditation on perception, resilience, and renewal.

Installed within the landscape, the work shifts according to the viewer’s position. From one side, the doors appear closed, forming a sequence of barriers. From the other, mirrored surfaces dissolve into the surrounding horizon, reflecting sea, sky, and light back into the environment.

Balancing land art, installation, and reflection, Reflective Journey considers how perspective is shaped through experience, and how moments of rupture can give way to transformation. Through this subtle intervention, Abedinirad creates a space that honours both loss and the enduring human capacity for adaptation and hope.

Delighted to see former GAZELL.iO resident Primavera De Filippi featured in Strange Rules at Palazzo Diedo, Venice.

Curated by Mat Dryhurst, Holly Herndon, and Hans Ulrich Obrist with Adriana Rispoli, the exhibition brings together artists including Harold Cohen, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Trevor Paglen, Philippe Parreno, Avery Singer, and Agnieszka Kurant to explore the emerging field of “Protocol Art”, artistic practices engaging with the systems, infrastructures, and invisible architectures shaping contemporary digital culture.

Now on view at Palazzo Diedo during the 61st Venice Biennale
4 May – 22 November 2026

An artist and legal scholar at Harvard University, Primavera De Filippi’s practice explores the intersection of art, law, and technology, with a particular focus on the social and political implications of blockchain systems and decentralised networks.

GAZELL.iO is thrilled to welcome Shirin Abedinirad as our May and June resident.

Working across video, performance, land art and installation, Abedinirad explores identity as fluid and relational, unfolding in dialogue with the natural world. Using elemental materials such as water, mirrors and light, she creates minimal, site-responsive works that dissolve boundaries between body, landscape and perception.

Born in Tabriz, Iran, her practice evolved from painting to performance and public interventions addressing gender, sexuality and human compassion. A pivotal desert experience in 2013 led to her signature land-based works, where reflection, both optical and conceptual, becomes a means of rethinking presence and interconnectedness.

Exhibiting internationally since 2010, her work spans Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and North America. She is the author of Fashion and Conceptual Art in the 21st Century, holds an MFA from Michigan State University, and is currently an assistant professor at Utah Valley University.
