Well that sold out fast! Let us know if enough of you want to do this, and we’ll try and organise another workshop date.

Join us and Cirencester History Festival to learn the lost art of smocking.

Once a common stitch, smocking gathers in lots of fabric and creates a light stretch - useful before elastic was invented!

You’ll work with textile artist Jocasta Bullock to create a sampler, learning basic stitches and discover how this once-practical technique created wearable and durable everyday working garments.

Tickets are now on sale for Cirencester History Festival

We’re celebrating the smock - and unpicking its story. A story that might not be quite the romantic pastoral idea we have about this garment.

You’ll get to see a selection of smocks from the Corinium Museum social history collection, and historian professor Alison Toplis (smockfrock98) will talk about their everyday, very utilitarian use.

Tickets via the Cirencester History Festival website

New Brewery Hearts is our way of sharing the wellbeing, confidence and fulfilment that making can bring – especially when times are tough.

Since launching the scheme in 2024, we’ve provided 2,800 hours of free creative learning to people who might otherwise have been unable to take part.

These studio hours are about much more than learning a craft. They are time to focus, connect with others, build confidence and experience the simple satisfaction of making something with your own hands. Sophie, one of our New Brewery Hearts recipients, shares what that means to her.

New Brewery Hearts is made possible by the trusts, organisations and individuals who support our work. Thank you for helping more people find a place in our studios.

Made at New Brewery Arts, from head to toe.

Sewing tutor Lauren Holloway usually teaches you how to make things here – from an underwear masterclass to a beautiful linen dress.

But this summer she swapped the sewing machine for the silversmithing bench and took part as a workshop student herself.

So if she signs up for our NEW leather sneaker workshop she really could be wearing ‘Made at New Brewery Arts’ from head to toe.

All our autumn workshops are available to book.

Our hands were made to do more than scroll.

This autumn, give your hands something new to learn: shaping clay, carving stone, pulling a print, setting silver, stitching cloth, or working with materials you’ve never touched before.

We’ve just launched more than 60 workshops between now and Christmas. Each is an invitation to slow down, learn from a skilled maker and experience the quiet satisfaction of creating something yourself.

See what your hands can make. Explore the autumn workshops programme - https://www.newbreweryarts.org.uk/workshops.

If the message matters, the card should too.

We might be biased, but we think we’re the best place to buy cards in Cirencester. We’ve got designs by UK artists and illustrators, sustainably printed, or even handprinted, and sometimes made entirely by hand.

Losing these three creative giants in a week feels like a real blow.

But it brings into focus the extraordinary joy these 3 wildly different artists brought into our lives. It feels almost impossible to imagine our cultural world without their vision, their songs, their performances and their creativity.

The worlds, stories and characters they gave us have become part of our shared experience. They changed how we see, hear and imagine - and made our lives all the richer in the process.

Dolly, Tim & Yayoi - thank you. ❤️

One exhibition - Two winners

As well as the public vote, for Raw Talent this year we added a special prize - The Claire Sandars Award.

The award goes Francis Martin, and his oil painting titled ’Nicole’. It’s a tiny piece, but packs a punch, capturing a wealth of emotions in a still moment.

Francis is a tutor here at New Brewery Arts, and while his courses for autumn term have all filled up, we’re making plans for future courses with Francis, so keep an eye out for new dates.

Francis Martin

The Claire Sandars Award has been created in memory of a much-loved tutor who died last year. The award celebrates the creativity, commitment and the spirit of joy and learning that Claire brought to our studios and students for so many years.
