Best known for his somewhat belle époque style paintings, this is an unusual (and to me) far more interesting departure by Anglo Irish painter Ken Moroney.
A small portrait of James - a proper characterful young man sartorially dressed way advanced of his years.

Artist: Ken Moroney (1949-2018) British
Title: “Portrait Of James”
Medium: oil on board
Size: 30cm x 25cm inclusive of frame
Price: £320
Notes: Born in London of Anglo Irish heritage. The Royal Academy nominated him in 1976 as being one of the few promising young artists to emerge this century. His work subsequently exhibited at The Royal Academy and in Frost & Reed, Bourne Gallery, Hollywood Road Gallery, Thompsons Gallery, David Messum’s, John Davies in Stow-on-the-Wold, Duncan Miller London. More recently exhibited at the Arts Club
40 Dover Street, Mayfair, London. Died in 2018.

An unknown artist but incredibly good quality .. an English painter working in France in the 1950s .. I can’t find an artist with the surname Spilmont so I guess you’d have to avoid this if you are a trophy artist hunter but conversely ..consider this if you just like really good quality period paintings because this is lovely!

Artist: M K Spilmont (mid 30th Century) English / French
Title: “Street in Lourdes France”
Medium: oil on board
Size: 47cm x 36cm inclusive of frame
Price: £375
Notes: A beautifully painted French oil from the 1950s. Original artist label verso. The charming French street scene with a nun in the foreground wearing a traditional cornette headpiece. The painter Spilmont of Otley Road in Leeds appears not to exist in any of the reference books which is quite odd considering the quality of the painting and that there is the remains of an exhibition label verso- but I’ve drawn a blank sadly! Maybe someone can do better than me on the research ..

A great example of Bob Richardsons Manchester street scenes- evocative, occasionally gritty, always authentic - I do love his work. It reminds me of when I used to visit my Auntie Molly in the backstreets of Liverpool as a child.

Artist: Bob Richardson PS (1938-) British
Title: “Locals Gossip”
Medium: pastel on paper
Size: 74cm x 59cm inclusive of frame
Price: £550

Whilst in full-time employment, Bob enjoyed a run of successful exhibitions and in 1975 decided to become a professional artist. Richardson is a member of the Pastel Society and has regularly exhibited his art work there - in 1991 receiving the Grand Prix award. Recent solo exhibitions include 1998 at Clark Art Gallery in Hale Manchester.

Strang must have painted this work ‘in the frame’ with impasto paint embedded into the frames slip. Known for his impasto brushwork I think this one is probably the highest key of all the works we’ve had by Strang over the years. A beautiful piece by a very talented and popular Cornish painter.

Michael J Strang (1942-2021) British
Title: “Cornish Poppies”
Medium: oil on board
Size: 57cm x 51cm framed
Price: £900
Notes: Described by Alison Bevan of the Penlee House Gallery as a “modern day romantic” Strang sought to absorb and then reproduce the natural world with the intensity of his Vision. He painted with both speed and passion, sometimes braving the fiercest of storms, en plein air, to capture a certain light. These would then be worked up as larger paintings in his studio. He originally trained at Wimbledon and Camberwell Schools from 1968-1975 then worked out of his studio near Penzance, becoming a member of the St Ives Society and one of Britains best loved plain air impasto painters.

Interesting and very unusual this one .. a very large oil on canvas incorporating x20 smaller landscapes. Each one a beautiful little colourful impressionist ‘sketch.’
Dated 1969 the work is by Geoffrey Norman Burnand (1912-1996) perhaps no surprises that he was a muralist and theatrical set designer but skills run deeper as he studied at both Farnham and the Royal Academy Schools (1931-2) under Walter Thomas Monnington who was also a muralist.

You can just about feel the stillness and serenity of dusk in the Yorkshire Dales with this lovely painting by Piers Browne (1949-2024). There’s a calmness and tranquility about it which is truly wonderful - and I don’t talk like that too often !
