Today my mum and I attended an ancient spinning circle in the roundhouse I helped build a couple of years ago on . It was great to learn how to make by first carding the wool (originally done using teasels) to get rid of knots and then using a clay-weighted wooden during the yarn making process. It was very interesting to learn about the history of this ancient craft and the types of wool from various breeds of sheep (it would only have been darker wool sheep during Iron Age as it was the Romans that introduced white sheep to the uk) and learning about various dyes that were used (eg nettle and alkanet and reeds). It is a very long but beautifully meditative process to make yarn and really gives an insight and appreciation to this craft and skill.
