The results of more sgraffito scratching!
I’ve got to the stage where I need reading glasses to see what I’m doing and I’m pretty sure I’ll end up with one of those magnifying ring lamps. It’s definitely worth the effort to end up with these leaf patterned pieces, ready to be assembled.
They are all parts of my creation for ‘Ebb and Flow’ at The Gallery at the Guild in October.

Keeping it simple! Of course it’s amazing to make complex, painted, highly decorative stained glass but I try not to forget the importance of the basics. Lots of my customers buy small stained glass hangings from retailers or online and will never own a more glamorous (and much more expensive) piece of stained glass art. So today I’m celebrating all the Sarah Davis Glass Window Cat owners out there who love their glassy feline friends - probably several hundred by now!

This Red Kite commission combined carefully chosen glass with a light touch on the painting. I’m hoping the recipient likes the result - a colourful bird of prey coming in to land.

There’s always a balance between achieving a pleasing (and affordable!) result in stained glass and a piece that captures every detail of the animal. Hopefully I’ve got it right this time 🤞🏻

Some shots from my stained glass demo and visit to the Stroud Artists Cooperative Park Life exhibition at Museum in the Park yesterday. I spent so much time chatting (while sporting my snazzy turquoise specs!) that I only had time to grab a few photos.

Just so you know, the spectacular art behind me is by Christopher H U James. The wonderful ceramic sculpture of the Museum was created by Jane Cunningham and I also fell for the painted textile ‘Parkland Summer’ by Sarah White. The exhibition is free to enter at the Museum and is open Tuesday to Sunday until 31st August.

I’m back home, still with lots to do - unpacking, putting away, catching up on housework, responding to enquiries - but I have had some time to reflect on my experience at RHS Badminton Flower Show. First of all, it was everything that I expected and more. The beautiful setting, amazing clear blue skies, incredible skills of the garden and plant specialists, and the joy of being surrounded with like minded people all combined to make my dip into the world of RHS shows a really positive experience. My glass looked wonderful in the big windows of the studio and the building itself was comfortable despite the hot weather. So many people came to see me and chat about stained glass! I had no idea when I naively sent in a proposal a few months ago that I’d be devoting quite such a huge amount of my life to the process, but it’s definitely been worthwhile. Perhaps I’ll have another chance to dabble in RHS showing again, but if I don’t, I can add this to my list of unique life experiences.

Of course I have some important thank yous…

- To Mr D, my husband, incredibly patient supporter and DIY expert, who gave up a lot of time to help me out.
- To The RHS, especially Anna, who answered my questions, however daft, and who along with Claire made the brave decision to let me loose on their precious visitors
- to Dave, Laura and the 🌿Malvern Garden Buildings🌿 team who magically created homes for three makers on an empty patch of grass
- to my sponsors, Painswick Rococo Garden and the amazing Exedra Nursery, who provided all my outdoor plants

My new stained glass horse panel ‘Ardent’ has been hanging in my Artisan Studio at RHS Badminton Flower Show this week and it’s been the first time that other people have seen it. It’s been great to hear lovely comments about him - self doubt is never far away when I’m cutting glass and scratching at paint at home! I was thrilled when I was sent some beautiful photos of Ardent by one of our visitors, including this one. Many thanks to Mel! (you know who you are but I can’t tag you)

As some of you will know, Ardent is based on a horse that competed in the amateur competition at Badminton earlier this year. Perhaps he’ll find a new home with an eventing rider?

Meet ‘Ardent’, a sgraffito painted stained glass horse that I’m making for my Artisan Studio at RHS Badminton Flower Show in early July. He’s based on a beautiful horse that was ridden in competition at Badminton earlier this year. (She’s actually a mare, and a bay, but artistic license has allowed a bit of flexibility!)

For those of you who like to know about method, I’ve used a grey wispy glass from and a mixture of Reusche paints. The paint is applied, matted slightly to get the right texture, allowed to dry, then scratched away to create the design. I have to work blind, based on initial sketches, because the paint is opaque and I can’t see a pattern underneath until it’s removed. Additional details are added with brushwork later. It’s a bit hot to run my kiln at the moment so it’s a good job I’ve already fired these. ‘Ardent’ is a leaded panel that I’ll display on a light box for the Show.
