For The Love Of Lace

For The Love Of Lace My own handmade items, shows and demonstrations, vintage lace and tools, the history of lace, what

When I was 8 years old, I watched a lady making lace at the Royal Bath and West show, and was mesmerised by it instantly. I knew from that day that it was something I wanted to achieve. I was lucky enough to have some lessons from the lovely Joan Blanchard 30+ years ago, and I feel that am still learning even now. I prefer to use antique and vintage lace tools, and aim to keep this gorgeous art al

ive. I hope this page can inspire others, not just in regards to lace, but in traditional crafts as a whole. I'll be sharing details of what I make, craft events and shows that I attend and display at, vintage and antique items that I make, buy and sell, and all things lacey in between. Member of:

Very excited to start reading this large rare book. I have been trying to find a copy of this for quite sometime, and, it’s said that “everything comes to those who waits” and that is so true. It was published in 1983 by The Victoria and Albert museum in London. This was also the year when I first started to be taught to make lace so I have waited a fair amount of time to find this and to get it at a reasonable price.

This video has been on YouTube for some time, parts of it show a lacemaker outside her cottage, making lace. This lady is Annie Goodfield, she was taught by her grandmother and also attended Lady Suffolks lace school in Malmesbury in the early part of the last century. I now demonstrate lacemaking at Malmesbury museum, and also help at the lacemaking days, a chance for people to have a go at this ancient craft. One of those days was this week, a couple in their twenties came in and asked if they could have a try, the man said he had a video, could he show me, the film was taken outside the house he now lives in. So I watched and said “ Oh that’s Annie, Annie Goodfield” he was amazed, so I went and found one of the leaflets available in the museum, which tells Annie’s story. Annie’s grandmother asked her to keep Malmesbury lace alive, which she did. I was lucky to be taught lacemaking by Joan Blanchard, who wrote a book all about Malmesbury lace, now I hope I’m doing my bit to keep Malmesbury lace alive too.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Just a few photos of my demonstrating of the making of Malmesbury lace at Malmesbury museum in Wiltshire. I will be doing this every other week on Wenesdays this year. It’s free to visit, they have a display about lacemaking, and lots of other local history too.

To all my friends who follow my page, this is very important to Lace making as a whole, you do not need to be a lacemaker, there are only three simple questions to answer, and it could have a great influence on lacemaking in the future.

So, bobbins seem to have been coming thick and fast in the last couple of weeks, more than 300 !, but more of that another time. This one antique bone bobbin came with some wooden bobbins, old and new, from a friend at Glevum lacemakers. The head is missing, the wire decoration gone and no spangle, a bit of pressure on hubby and how we have a bobbin looking something like it did 150 years ago.

Happy New Year to you all, hope you had some lovely lace related presents for Christmas as I was lucky enough to receive this antique French lacemaking pillow. As you can see from the photos the bobbins, pins and lace was very tangled up which took me 4 hours to sort out and put right and then another hour to tie in some broken threads and get the lace flattened out. The bobbins are unusual as they have pre wound thread in paper cones made by Le Tjevoli, the head comes off the bobbin so you can slide the paper cones on and refit the bobbin head. This was a very quick bobbin thread refill which kept the thread clean. Tjevoli is an anagram of the surname Jolivet. Madame Jolivet who invented this bobbin and thread system was an experienced lacemaker who won a medal in 1899 at a national exhibition in France. In her shop in Le Mans she taught lacemaking. The pillow roller has news paper packing out the pattern which I have not disturbed, but I can see is dated 1912, if only the pillow and bobbins could tell their story ! PS. there were 2 bobbins missing, luckily I had one in my collection with the paper cone but if anyone out there has a spare Tjevoli bobbin and cone I would be very interested in purchasing it. This would complete the pillow as I have had to add an odd bobbin in.
