Over the past three decades, Old Master drawings specialist and collector Katrin Bellinger has built an extraordinary collection of over 1,800 works spanning drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, and sculptures—its core strength, however, remains Old Master drawings. It includes masterpieces by Rembrandt, Tiepolo, and Seurat, alongside standout works by leading women artists such as Marie-Gabrielle Capet, Lisa Brice, and Chantal Joffe, many of them depicting a singular motif: the artist at work. “All these pictures are telling you a story,” shares Bellinger. “They give an insight into the artist’s mind.”
Bellinger also runs the Tavolozza Foundation, a non-profit founded in 2001 through which she aims to heighten the accessibility and awareness of works on paper. In recent years, the foundation has supported a wide range of activities, from special exhibitions to digitization programs. “It is so important that good quality images of works on paper are made available to the public online,” she says, explaining that Old Master drawings in museums are often stored in print rooms due to their sensitivity to light.
Presented in partnership with AXA XL, TEFAF’s Collecting with Intent series explores the philosophies behind Bellinger’s collection—how she developed her interests and connoisseurship, how she shaped her collection, and how it has presented opportunities contributing to philanthropic endeavors within and beyond the art world.
