Do you want to help and encourage young artists? There are still a few weeks left to enter the Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize Chester. The Competition is open to students who are enrolled at a secondary institution in Cheshire West & Chester, Wrexham and Flintshire during the 2025-2026 academic year and are aged 11-18 years old at the time of entry. The chosen artworks will be exhibited at Chester Cathedral. The Sovereign Art Foundation was established in 2003 and has since raised over $15 million through its global art prizes and charitable initiatives. The Chester Student Art Prize is part of a growing network of student prizes that aim to give young artists a platform they might not otherwise have access to.
I'm delighted to be one of the judges this year. https://www.sovereignartfoundation.com/sp-chester/

Fired up with a fix of Japanese inspiration. Our visit to the Hokusai Museum last year was fascinating, especially seeing the recreation of his studio & the exhibition illustrating his woodblock process. My Japan sketchbook is bursting with ideas that are influencing my current work in the studio. If you’re visiting our gallery on The Rows this weekend check out the current painting on the easel… or watch this space!

On Christmas Eve a lovely American couple came into the gallery, having just checked into a city centre hotel for the week. We were chatting about what a good base Chester is for exploring North Wales. They were intrigued by this painting and asked where Llanddwyn Island is. A few days later they came back and told us they had driven from Chester to Llanddwyn (on Anglesey) twice over Christmas! They absolutely loved it (and also bought my original painting). One of the joys of running an art gallery is meeting so many people from around the world. Huge thanks to everyone who has bought paintings and prints in December, we love hearing your stories and reasons for connecting to a painting. Lots more to see, come up to Watergate Row this weekend. https://juliecolclough.com/llanddwyn-island-anglesey (A small edition of 75 prints will be available)

What makes a picture? From start to finish it’s about enjoying the moment, loving the process of exploring ideas, sketching on location, evolving the finished painting in the studio, bespoke framing, and finally meeting you, our lovely customers who walk into the gallery with your own personal reasons for connecting with a painting. We have loved hearing your stories through December, it’s been a real joy so thank you thank you to everyone who has visited and supported this little independent business, celebrating our 7th Christmas on The Rows. Here today (Sunday) 11am until 4pm, why not pop in and browse the latest paintings. Next week we are not open every day so please (as always) message first if travelling to see us, we don’t want to miss you.
