The dog days are (certainly not) over 🐾

At the Wallace Collection, we believe every day should be ! To mark the occasion, we are sharing one of our most beloved portraits of four legged friends, this incredible painting by Edwin Landseer. Dated 1858-59, this work depicts a black and tan terrier looking longingly at a bone guarded by a dozing St Bernard.

With 907 dogs in and amongst the paintings, sculpture, metals, jewellery and arms and armours of the Wallace Collection, we are proud dog people! Browse our catalogue, Faithful and Fearless, to discover more about how artists have depicted dogs through the centuries.

Built at the highest point of Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne in 1876, Guilfoyle’s Volcano is today used as part of the 'Working Wetlands' project. This project saves water by harvesting stormwater run-off from Anderson St and Domain Rd drains and treating it through a series of wetlands in the water circulation system. This process reduces the Garden's reliance on potable water for irrigation.

The whole process starts when the stormwater flows through gross pollutant traps before it is gravity fed to two lakes. Inlets in these lakes have sediment ponds that treat the water via physical and chemical processes. The lake water is then circulated through a system of connected water bodies within the Gardens. Pumps located in Ornamental Lake allow circulation within the lake and also pump water through underground pipes to Guilfoyle's Volcano. In turn, Guilfoyle's Volcano gravity feeds the water to Nymphaea Lily Lake. From there, the water flows via Fern Gully Creek through Central Lake before returning to Ornamental Lake.

In two of the water catchments there are floating wetlands. The roots of their semi aquatic plants are suspended in the water, allowing fine particles to be trapped and nutrients to be adsorbed. The microorganisms present in the biofilm covering their roots increase the efficiency of this process.

The lakes and the volcano act as storage for the water and can provide approximately 52ML/yr for irrigation.
