A 7 mile circular walk from Church Stretton up Townbrook Valley to the trig at Pole Bank and back via Carding Mill Valley. Lovely 360 views. I was hoping to see vast carpets of purple heather but it had mostly dried up apart from the odd patch. The best bit was sitting on a rock eating my sandwich with the sound of a tiny stream and nothing around apart from a few sheep and a few other walkers. There were a few harebells, I spotted a grey wagtail, heard a couple of nuthatches in the wood (where I got a bit lost for a few minutes). I also saw a couple of hill ponies in the distance.

I’m a restless soul, always looking to improve, looking for the next thing. Painting helps me to notice, helps me to slow down but it also drives me. Sometimes I try and do too much. There are so many things I want to paint - it can be overwhelming. I’m going to paint this scene, it’s a few minutes walk across the fields from where I live. I’ve been here thousands of times over the last 27 years. It’s engrained in me now. The cows are here for a few months every year. We are on limestone with natural springs coming up to form the start of the River Avon. Thankfully the water has kept going and the cows can cool off - when it’s been really hot I paddle in the water - it’s surprisingly cold! Can I do this scene justice? We’ll see over the next few weeks. I’ll post my progress and see how I go…

I found the equivalent of treasure on my walk this morning. I noticed some large bird droppings and pellets under a tree. “Owl”, I thought. Then I looked around and about and found a dozen feathers caught on the grasses. It had obviously been preening itself. The feathers were so light and soft, it was hard to get them home without them blowing away. I shall attempt to paint one of these soon. I think it must have been a Barn Owl but I’m not 100% sure. I did see a Tawny Owl chick not far from here a few years ago. Most of the time we walk past such things and don’t give them a thought but when you really look at them they are just so beautiful!

I like the simplicity of these cradled Jackson's Art Supplies panels. No expensive frame required, just hang them on a nail or fix them to the wall with command strips. You can decide whether to hang them vertically or horizontally, side by side, in pairs or not, wide apart or close together - whatever fits your interior. They measure 4x12 inches.
